The Art of Slowing Down: Inside Steenberg’s Rest & Reset Retreat

Following its initial introduction last year, Steenberg Hotel & Spa reintroduces its Rest & Reset Wellness Retreat for 2026 with a refined and more intimate approach designed for deeper impact and genuine restoration.

Set against the vineyards and mountain slopes of the Constantia Valley, this four-day, three-night immersive retreat invites a small and intimate group of guests to step out of the rush of daily life and into a slower, steadier rhythm. In a landscape where luxury retreats have become commonplace, Steenberg’s offering is intentionally different: boutique in scale, intimate by design, and rooted in nervous system regulation rather than trend-driven wellness.

Framed around the concept of ‘Prana’ (breath and life force), the retreat is not a boot camp or rigid programme. It is a space for profound somatic renewal wrapped in the exclusivity of a Michelin Key destination.

In its inaugural rollout of Michelin Keys across the continent, the Michelin Guide awarded Steenberg Hotel & Spa one Key in the ‘Very Special Stay’ category, recognising exceptional character, design and service. Considered the hospitality world’s equivalent of Michelin Stars, this accolade underscores the estate’s commitment to immersive, high-quality experiences. The retreat now forms part of that elevated offering: deep rest, authentic wellness and Michelin Key luxury for an intimate few.

“We believe true restoration is rooted in balance and intention,” says Monique Lagorie, Spa Manager at Steenberg Spa. “It is a bespoke experience for a small group where guests feel seen, supported and unhurried. The intimacy creates psychological safety, which in itself is deeply regulating.”

Set within working vineyards, gardens and mountain air, the retreat draws on the scientifically supported benefits of natural environments. Research in environmental psychology and neuroscience consistently shows that time in nature can reduce cortisol levels, lower heart rate and blood pressure, activate the parasympathetic nervous system, improve cognitive clarity and reduce mental fatigue. “At Steenberg, the integration of nature is not decorative,” Lagorie explains. “Moving between your yoga mat, the spa, the vineyards and the dining table becomes part of the physiological shift from stress to restoration.”

The retreat is led by holistic wellness coach and conscious breathwork practitioner Olivia Moon, whose integrative approach blends somatic healing, meditation and neuroscience-informed practices. “My work helps people reconnect with their inner resources,” says Moon. “Conscious breathwork stimulates the vagus nerve and shifts the body from fight-or-flight into rest-and-restore. Combined with somatic awareness and mindful movement, it supports lasting calm rather than temporary escape.”

Each morning begins with yoga, meditation and breathwork designed to awaken the body without strain. Slow, controlled movement reduces muscular guarding, improves circulation and enhances nervous system flexibility. Somatic practices support the release of stored tension patterns and improve interoception (awareness of the body’s internal state), particularly valuable for high-functioning, high-performance individuals.

Thermal therapy within the spa’s outdoor thermal suite and vitality pool further supports circulation, vagal tone and gentle stress adaptation. Afternoons allow for guided stretching, self-healing integration practices and immersive sound healing journeys. Importantly, the programme follows a calm and predictable structure, reducing decision fatigue and increasing a sense of safety and stability.

Included in the four-day experience are two spa treatments, designed to detoxify, cleanse and energise the body by releasing toxins while restoring physical and mental strength. Therapeutic touch forms a key part of the retreat’s holistic philosophy, extending beyond relaxation into intentional renewal.

Group size is deliberately limited to maintain an atmosphere of emotional co-regulation and connection. Small, curated groups naturally foster oxytocin release and a sense of belonging that are powerful yet often overlooked components of wellbeing. “This is where boutique scale becomes an advantage,” says Lagorie. “Guests are not one of many. They are part of a considered circle, within a historic destination that prioritises excellence in every detail.”

Dining also forms an integral part of the retreat experience. Rather than restrictive ‘retreat food’, guests enjoy seasonal and balanced menus at Tryn and Bistro Sixteen82. Balanced nourishment supports blood sugar stability and mood regulation, while sensory pleasure further encourages parasympathetic activation. “True restoration includes joy,” says Lagorie. “There is no deprivation here. Only balance.”

The Rest & Reset Wellness Retreat will run on selected dates each month starting 20 – 23 April 2026, with rates from R6 225 per person sharing, per night (single supplement rates apply). A limited number of day visitor places are available for the full four-day experience, subject to availability and preferential group rates are available on request.

While the retreat anchors Steenberg Spa’s wellness calendar, seasonal offerings provide further moments of restorative pause. This autumn, the Finishing Touch Experience includes a Pure Supreme Manicure and Pedicure using Margaret Dabbs™ London PURE products, access to the outdoor thermal suite and pool relaxation area, and a light lunch at Tryn. Priced at R1 695 per person and valid from 1 April to 31 May 2026, it embodies the same philosophy of considered, nurturing care in a concise, indulgent format.

“Whether a guest joins us for four days or simply for an afternoon treatment, the intention remains the same,” says Lagorie. “We are creating a sanctuary for reconnection with self. A place to slow down, regulate the nervous system and return to daily life steadier, clearer and restored.”

About us

Actually, Home Food and Travel offers a lot more than just reviews of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.  We also visit great destinations, receive advice from interior designers and stop to smell the roses and taste the coffee.

Our team of journalists are seasoned travels and love visiting the myriad of exciting places around South Africa.  Whether it is off the beaten track or in the heart of the top attractions of the country, we’ll be there,

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you on the road!
