Day Safaris and Horse Trails at Amakhala Game Reserve
Amakhala is the best place for Day Safaris. You get to experience authentic, wild Africa and even still be able to drive back to Port Elizabeth – should you wish to.
The day safaris depart from Leeuwenbosch Country House in the mornings. These day safaris offer an escape into breathtaking landscapes as well as unforgettable wildlife sightings – including of the so-called Big 5, Black Wildebeest, Cheetah, Giraffe, Zebra and numerous other animals.
You will have an experienced ranger on hand to help explain and put everything into perspective.
Or try the Amakhala Horse Trails, which are designed for small groups of up to 6 intermediate to experienced riders. Exploring the bush on horseback gets you closer to the bush and you will soon appreciate the natural landscape and its incredible inhabitants. Your horseback party can get as close as 10 to 15 meters from wildlife such as eland, wildebeest, zebra, hartebeest and giraffe.
The Amakhala Horse Trails are run from the Woodbury Tented Camp, but guests at any lodge or camp at Amakhala Game Reserve can join them. All horse trails are led by experienced and knowledgeable guides. The horses are well-trained and everything is done with your safety as a priority.
Two or three hours on the trail is meant to the riders’ level of experience and allow plenty of time for wildlife viewing and finding the perfect spot to rest the horses and enjoy refreshments and snacks.
Reviews from previous Amakhala guests
“We loved the Amakhala game reserve – everything was perfect. We saw a wide variety of animals although the hippos eluded us! The facilities, food and accommodation were first class and we enjoyed our stay very much. The staff were very friendly and we had a brilliant ranger in Mina,” shared Alimor on their TripAdvisor page.
Derek P added; “We travelled to Amakhala as part of a tour of the Cape but it was undoubtedly the highlight. The proximity to the animals was fantastic not only on the game drives but right outside our lodge where there was a watering hole. The rangers were extremely knowledgeable and friendly, the hospitality staff were first class and the accommodation and food were tremendous. Cannot recommend this highly enough.”
