My journey each morning to the old University of Port Elizabeth for my ubiquitous B.Com studies traversed the Port Elizabeth beach front. My priorities at that time were spearfishing first, studies second.
On days when there was a light westerly wind the ocean would be clear enough for a dive and I would pull up in one of the ocean side parking lots and hit the water. Incidentally, ideal diving and surfing conditions are very similar and our lecturers must have wondered why classes were so thin on windy days.
The ocean temperature in PE is not known for its warmth, and, throw in the wind chill factor, and divers and surfers alike would be cold and famished when we reluctantly walked up the beach after an endorphin inducing morning.
The best place to get warm was in the car with the heater blowing and we would all congregate in the parking lot of the legendary Something Good Roadhouse overlooking Pollock Beach. The huge portions of hot chips, burgers and toasties would leave us feeling replete and, if there was a late lecture or two we would head off to a class covered in crusty salt and smelling slightly fishy.
As Something Good Roadhouse has been around since the 1950’s there are generations of Port Elizabethans and holiday makers who no doubt share similar memories.
I miss those care free days but the memories come flooding back each time I visit the wonderfully revamped version of this great roadhouse.
Roadhouse, Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlour
At some point the roadhouse closed down for a few years leaving a gaping hole in the beachfront vibe. The current owners of Something Good Roadhouse grew up on the PE beachfront and no doubt have their own awesome memories of this landmark and have not only revived Something Good Road House but have added a great restaurant to the building too.
Perched along the pristine beachfront of Port Elizabeth, on Marine Drive, Something Good Roadhouse now boasts a delightful ice cream parlour, a restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating options, a kids play area, ample secure parking, and of course the unique flash and park takeaway service.
The ice cream parlour at Something Good Roadhouse is a haven for ice cream enthusiasts of all ages. Step inside and be greeted by a wide array of tantalizing flavors that range from classic favorites to inventive creations. Whether you crave the velvety richness of chocolate or the refreshing zing of fruit sorbets, there is a treat to satisfy every palate.
The restaurant offers a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor seating, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience. Whether you prefer the cozy atmosphere of the indoor area or the refreshing ocean breeze while dining al fresco, you’ll find the perfect spot to savor your meal. The picturesque backdrop of the beachfront adds an extra touch of magic to your dining experience.
Another improvement on the old Something Good is that the restaurant is now licensed too. The drinks menu is vast with a great selection of hot and cold beverages including smoothies and their famous milkshakes as well beers, wine and cocktails. After a hot day on the beach you can now enjoy a refreshing ice cold beer or cocktail!
The food menu still has all my old favourite comfort foods as well as wraps, tapas, bagels, pizza, nachos and fresh fish and chips. I am a hake connoisseur and am pleased to report that Something Good always serves the freshest.
In addition to its culinary offerings, Something Good Roadhouse provides a great kiddies play area. Youngsters can bring their bikes and enjoy a safe and exciting tared riding track, adding an element of fun and adventure to their visit
Community is Important to Something Good Roadhouse
Something Good Roadhouse takes great pride in their location and regularly sponsors beach clean-ups and host school groups where they educate kids about the wonderful marine environment found in Algoa Bay.
They are also very pet friendly and conduct dog walks too. Keepan eye out for the new Doggie Menu coming shortly!
You know a restaurant is good when it is always busy and the parking lot in front of Something Good Roadhouse is seldom less than a couple of rows thick with traffic. No doubt there are a whole new generation of locals and visitors at Something Good Roadhouse and I am pleased to report that there are still surfers and divers shivering in their cars and making their own memories at this great eatery.
