An awesome pedigree
Merak is not just any restaurant, it comes with a great pedigree and is part of the enduring legacy of Jonathan Gunston, the visionary restaurateur whose name is synonymous with the culinary excellence of Port Elizabeth. More than that, it is my go-to restaurant. The place I choose of the top of my head when hungry and the place I choose to wine and dine those that are close to me.
Having carved out a devoted following with his previous ventures—most notably the much-loved Two Olives and the ever-popular Nolio—Gunston’s latest establishment (although I hear there is something new in the pipeline too) brings a wave of anticipation.
The closure of Two Olives left a gastronomic void in the hearts of many patrons; yet, Merak answers that longing with flair and generosity. Many of the beloved dishes that once delighted Two Olives regulars have found a new home on Merak’s menu, ensuring that a visit here feels both nostalgic and novel.
Mediterranean Setting
Nestled in a prime location just off the upmarket Main Road in Walmer, Merak exudes the inviting warmth of a Spanish-Mediterranean retreat. The establishment’s architecture and décor seamlessly blend rustic charm with contemporary elegance, transporting diners to sun-drenched coasts and lively plazas.
Inside, Merak offers a variety of seating options to suit any mood or occasion. The main restaurant, situated downstairs, buzzes with convivial energy, while a more secluded area upstairs offers intimacy for quieter gatherings or special celebrations.
For those who prefer the open air, seating is available in the covered courtyard—an oasis of tranquillity—or on the patio that graces the restaurant’s façade. The well-stocked bar, with its inviting counter seating, promises both classic and innovative libations, making it an ideal spot for a pre-dinner aperitif or a nightcap.

Food at Merak
As one might expect from a Gunston restaurant, the menu at Merak is a love letter to Mediterranean cuisine. It features an enticing array of hot and cold tapas—perfect for sharing and sampling a spectrum of bold, sun-kissed flavours. The main courses embrace the best of the region: think fragrant lamb, succulent steaks, seasonal seafood, and an abundance of fresh salads.
Although sushi is not in keeping with the décor or rest of the menu, Merak’s sushi is top notch and, as my connoisseur daughter points out, one of the best in the city.
No meal is complete without indulging in one of Merak’s decadent desserts, each crafted with attention to both tradition and innovation.
The wine list stands out as one of the most comprehensive in Port Elizabeth, thoughtfully curated to complement every dish and satisfy even the most discerning oenophile. Whether you are craving a robust red or a crisp white, Merak’s cellar delivers excellence by the glass.
Personal Experience
A truly great restaurant strikes the perfect balance between delectable cuisine, attentive service, and a welcoming atmosphere. When these elements converge, as they do at Merak, the result is a place that beckons as a go-to for every occasion—be it a business dinner, a relaxed lunch, or even a quick bite when time is of the essence.
This balance is precisely what makes Merak a standout in my eyes: the familiar flavours evoke fond memories, the staff’s professionalism enhances every visit, and the ambiance invites you to linger and return, again and again. For me, Merak is not just another restaurant; it is a culinary haven, a place where old favourites are rediscovered, and new memories are made with every meal.
