Lake St. Bernard Trout and Game Farm offers comfortable self-catering accommodation on a beautiful farm in the scenic Southern Drakensberg. If you love the outdoors, this holiday destination should be on your list.

Lake St. Bernard, which is famous for its rainbow and brown trout fishing, gets its name from the St Bernard Peak Mountain, which you have a perfect view of from the cottages.

Accommodation at Lake St. Bernard Trout and Game Farm

Lake St. Bernard Trout and Game Farm has three beautiful cottages located along the shores of the lake. Each cottage is individually-furnished to offer comfort, relaxation and privacy.

The Rainbow Trout Cottage is a luxury self-catering cottage suited for families or groups. It can sleep up to seven guests in three bedrooms, it has two bathrooms. In the Main Bedroom, you will find a King-size bed with a single bed and an en-suite bathroom while the two spare bedrooms are furnished with two single beds and share a bathroom.

Since it’s a self-catering unit, the Rainbow Trout Cottage also comes with an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge, which lead out onto an undercover braai. It is strategically positioned to give you the best views of Lake St. Bernard and St. Bernards Peak.

In front of the cottage is a jetty that is ideal for fishing or a platform from which to jump into the lake for a swim. The Cottage also comes with its own paddle boat!

Also accommodating up to seven people in two bedrooms, the Reedbuck Rest Cottage is their only thatch-roof cottage. It is popular for its homey, rustic and warm feel. Inside, you will find an open-plan kitchen, dining room and lounge area.

The main bedroom is located on the ground floor and comes with a Queen-size bed. It is also the only cottage with a loft bedroom that comes furnished with a Queen-size bed and three single beds.

For your entertainment, the cottage comes with a Weber, an outside braai area and its own paddle boat.

The Crowned Crane Cottage also sleeps up to seven in three bedrooms. Inside the Main Bedroom is a King-size bed with a single bed and an en-suite bathroom while the two spare bedrooms have two single beds and share a bathroom.

It has an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge which leads out onto an undercover braai area with amazing views of Lake St. Bernard, St. Bernards Peak and surrounding mountains. It also comes with a paddle boat for adventures on the dam.

Facilities at Lake St. Bernard Trout and Game Farm

Standard facilities on the farm include an outdoor swimming pool; free, secure parking for your vehicles as well as a Lapa where you can relax with your favorite beverage or cocktail.

For your kids, there is a jungle gym and a trampoline for the kids. Try your hand at putt putt or enjoy a horse ride at the local lodge.

Things to do at Lake St. Bernard Trout and Game Farm

There is a range of activities for the whole family to enjoy during your stay at Lake St. Bernard Trout and Game Farm.

If you need a complete break from your busy city lifestyle, there is nothing more relaxing and fulfilling than a South African Fly-Fishing Adventure in this beautiful part of the country.  Lake St. Bernard is stocked with brown and rainbow trout. The biggest fish caught in our waters are 13lb, and many 5lb-10lb fish!

In addition, the lake is suited to canoeing and swimming.

The property is also suited to hiking. Take on any one of their three hikes – the Bushmen Paintings Hike, Bamboo Pools Hike and Waterfall Hike. There are still other places to explore and find adventure around the farm.

While the Bushmen Paintings Hike offers spectacular paintings and views over the lake as well as picnic or sundowners spots, the Waterfall Hike and the Bamboo Pools hikes let you enjoy swimming with spectacular views of the area.

The farm also has plentiful routes for cycling and running for the extreme cyclists and even for kids. Other activities include birdwatching, game viewing or even horse riding at the local lodge.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important. 

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table. 

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.
