Launched this week, The Chef’s Table offers an intimate setting to indulge in a meticulously crafted nine-course menu, highlighting Chef Madubela’s passion for local flavours and culinary innovation.

Set within the bustling heart of the Level Four Restaurant kitchen, the 54 on Bath Chef’s Table provides diners with a front-row seat to the culinary artistry and orchestration of the kitchen team. This unique dining experience is available each evening at 6:30 pm, accommodating a maximum of four guests per session.

Guests will embark on a gastronomic journey through a curated menu that is a fusion of Mediterranean and South African cuisine featuring a beetroot cannelloni amuse-bouche, moving through succulent dishes like quail with lemongrass broth, seafood and corn chowder, and culminating with the exquisite lime-o-lade dessert. For those wishing to enhance their experience, a wine pairing option is also available.

Chef Donaldson Madubela’s culinary journey is deeply rooted in his childhood experiences, inspired by his father’s passion for cooking. After honing his skills at the International Hotel School, Chef Madubela embarked on a career that saw him refine his craft at prestigious establishments which include Mount Grace Hotel and Arabella Hotel, Golf and Spa. His tenure as Executive Chef at luxurious destinations such as Seychelles and Bazaruto Island has equipped him with a profound appreciation for diverse flavours and cultures.

Now, at the elegant 54 on Bath, Chef Madubela brings his expertise back to South Africa, blending local ingredients with his international culinary experiences to create dishes that are both innovative and rooted in tradition. His commitment to rediscovering South African flavours is at the heart of his delectable menu, promising a dining experience that celebrates the rich culinary heritage of the region.

The exclusivity and tailored nature of The Chef’s Table necessitate prepayment of R1250 per person for the nine-course dinner and optional wine pairing (additional R750pp). Reservations are accepted only online, ensuring a seamless booking process. Guests must complete their booking by paying the deposit within 48 hours; otherwise, the reservation will be automatically cancelled.

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important. 

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.
