Going solo in Dubai: Embrace the adventure

Solo travel has never been more popular, with more individuals each year choosing to explore the world on their own terms. This rising trend reflects a broader shift towards personal freedom and adventure, and it’s supported by an expanding array of services tailored for solo explorers. Expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.1% from 2023 to 2030, the solo travel industry is booming. Imagine travelling without compromises, where your schedule is the only one that matters. It’s just you, your boundless curiosity, and a world of endless possibilities waiting to be discovered at your own pace.

Dubai is the perfect playground for those eager to embark on a solo adventure, blending cutting-edge modern wonders with deep cultural traditions. As soon as you arrive, this dazzling city greets you with open arms, promising an atmosphere brimming with excitement and opportunities for independent exploration.

Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, offers near-unrivalled connectivity, with 42 weekly flights from three key South African destinations: Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. Solo travel is a rising trend on Emirates too, with flights booked from South Africa including just one passenger.

Safe and welcoming exploration

The interest in solo female travel has seen a remarkable upswing in recent years, indicating that more women are embracing the adventure of exploring new destinations independently. Dubai is an ideal spot for those looking to venture solo, providing a perfect mix of safety and excitement. The city’s efficient metro system and rigorous security measures ensure that all solo travellers, particularly women, can explore with ease and confidence. And, with English widely spoken, communication is never a hurdle.

As you wander Dubai, take a moment to look up at its awe-inspiring skyscrapers like the Burj Khalifa, iconic symbols of innovation and luxury. These wonders of architecture not only dominate the skyline but also signify Dubai’s commitment to maintaining a safe, well-managed urban environment, allowing you to explore with complete peace of mind.

A blend of tradition and modernity

Dubai is more than just modern marvels. Wander through the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood to discover charming lanes lined with traditional wind-tower houses and the fascinating Dubai Museum, full of ancient artefacts. Explore further at Alserkal Avenue, where contemporary art galleries bring new life to the city’s cultural scene while honouring its heritage.

For a full experience, join a city tour to learn about Dubai’s past and present. Dive into the bustling souks of Deira, filled with spicy aromas and vibrant textiles. Then, marvel at the stunning Jumeirah Mosque, a beautiful example of Islamic architecture.

Desert thrills

For adventurous souls, the desert offers thrilling experiences. Soar over golden dunes in a hot air balloon at sunrise or feel the rush of dune bashing and sandboarding. Try a dune buggy adventure for an adrenaline-fuelled ride.

If indoor thrills are more your style, test your skills with indoor skydiving or rock climbing.

A culinary odyssey

No trip to Dubai is complete without savouring its incredible cuisine. As an independent wanderer, you have the freedom to explore global gastronomy, from top-notch restaurants to humble local eateries serving fragrant regional dishes.

Don’t miss the chance to indulge in a culinary journey, tasting an array of decadent Arabic sweets and exploring the vibrant street food scene. Treat yourself to traditional Emirati dishes like grilled meats, fresh mezze, and aromatic rice dishes bursting with Middle Eastern flavour.

Unwind in style

When you need a break, Dubai’s beaches and rooftop bars offer tranquillity. Sink your toes into soft sands at Jumeirah Beach or Kite Beach, or head to upscale resorts along the Palm Jumeirah for exclusive access to pristine sands and luxurious amenities.

For a truly memorable experience, venture to one of Dubai’s iconic rooftop bars, like At.mosphere in the Burj Khalifa. Or enjoy panoramic views at Skyview Bar in the Burj Al Arab, often referred to as the world’s only 7-star hotel. Whichever you choose, kick back in style in Dubai’s breathtaking surroundings.

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you on the road!
