Firefly Falls is a Glamper’s Paradise in the Crags

Firefly Falls

The term ‘Glamping’ will forever be associated with expensive stays filled with luxuries one doesn’t need nor require. During my stay atFirefly Falls in the Crags, I encountered a more authentic approach to glamping and it was a great experience all round.

The Crags is a little known area located between Plettenberg Bay and Natures Valley, which is a highly popular location for leisure travellers, the natural environment and quiet surrounds serve as a retreat of sorts. This was to be my first visit to the area so I was intrigued as to what to find.

As we made our way into the property it was evident that a lot of work had been done by the owners to make visitors enjoy a somewhat magical feel when visiting. The creative array of wooden artwork and well-maintained flora made me feel that this was a place where one can recharge and soak in the beauty of the natural environment.

My friends and I spent a night in a Family Glamping Unit, which accommodated the four of us. It consisted of two tents; one had a Queen Sized Bed and the other two Single Beds. The tents themselves were extremely spacious and it had all we needed during our visit. We all had a really good night sleep and were delighted that there wasn’t too much noise throughout the property as we were quite spent.

I was excited to try out their outdoor shower in the morning, something I had not done in a forest-setting before. It is certainly something that guests should do when visiting, but perhaps just keep someone on lookout!

An unexpected highlight during my stay at Firefly Falls was meeting other guests and striking up conversations with them. As they get an array of travellers throughout South Africa as well as from other parts of the world, there is a good chance that you will run into someone really interesting. Travel is not a solo experience, but rather a shared one amongst others.

Prior to our departure I spent a portion of the morning simply marvelling at the natural environment that the property is part of. Their gardens are extremely well-maintained and although I did spot two different hiking routes, our schedule did not allow for such a venture.

If you are seeking an escape from the city and looking for something a bit different to the norm, then a stay at Firefly Falls is most definitely advised.

Accommodation at Firefly Falls

There are various accommodation types offered at Firefly Falls. This would include Glamping Tents, Camping spots, Forest Cabins, Safari Cabins, Family Cabins, a Farm Cottage and Budget Rooms.

The Glamping Tents are erected onto raised wooden decks and are found under a sheltered roof. There are seven campsites which accommodates two adults or even two caravans per spot.

For those seeking a bit more of a conventional stay, if that is a possibility at Firefly Falls, then their Cabins would be just for you. Choose to spend the night in their Forest, Safari or Family Cabins. Individually styled and accommodating between two and four guests, they serve as a great option for those seeking an escape, but also most of the comforts of home.

Facilities at Firefly Falls

You would be delighted to know that your stay at this gem of a property does not mean you must go off the grid or even worry if you will have a warm shower. The facilities at Firefly Falls are most definitely good quality.

The showers and ablutions were well kept and the charging points in the units mean that you can still be connected whilst on holiday.

We made full use of their shared kitchenette space as we made ourselves supper and breakfast. There was ample cutlery and crockery for us to use, the only requirement on our part was that we had to wash what we used.

Their hot tub and communal spaces, combined with their two hiking trails sets Firefly Falls apart in their offering.

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you on the road!
