Dolphin Encountours was founded by Angie Gullan in 1995 in the beautiful Ponto Do Ouro on the southern Mozambique coast and today is world famous for its ethical and responsible dolphin encounters.
Angie says, “Our sole porpoise is to create a safe space for human dolphin encounters to take place while contributing to their well-being through long term monitoring and conservation efforts in the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve.”
Dolphin Encountours is a highly professional organisation that works closely with a number of international conservation organisations and researchers that specialises educational marine mammal tourism, volunteer and internship stays.
Tours on offer by Dolphin Encountours
All tours start with a pre-launch presentation and safety talk; code of conduct and introduction to the local Dolphins of Ponta, research and conservation efforts in the Reserve.
Encountours are guided by Angie Gullan who has extensive knowledge in reading wild dolphin behaviour and facilitating experiences that work within the realms of conscious interaction – when dolphins stop what they are doing to come and engage with snorkelers simply because they want to.
There are three different tours on offer with the signature Full Dolphin Encounter lasting three days and recommended for those that are making a dolphin encounter a destination tour. The Mini Dolphin Encounter covers a maximum of two days while the Casual Encounter includes a day excursion.
“Due to the nature of the weather and wild dolphins we recommend the Full Encountour with its three boat launches and a few nights stay in Ponta do Ouro to avoid disappointment. Remember to book for the first day/s you are here; if in the event we need to reschedule for calmer seas we have some days to work with,” says Angie.
Important to know
Because the dolphins are wild and the weather unpredictable, it is best to book your stay for a couple of days in the area so that you improve your chances of swimming with the dolphins.
Obviously, you need to be able to swim and snorkel to participate. Swimming is a prerequisite but Dolphin Encountours do offer a snorkelling course for those that require.
Snorkelling gear is provided as part of the tour package as is a the Reef Tax.
