When visitors think about staying in Cape Town, the City Bowl, V&A Waterfront and Atlantic Seaboard usually dominate the conversation. While these are wonderful locations, there is another side to Cape Town that offers something equally special – tranquillity, space and understated luxury. That is exactly what I found during my stay at Glen Avon Lodge in Constantia.
Situated in one of Cape Town’s most prestigious suburbs, Glen Avon Lodge offers guests the rare opportunity to experience five-star luxury in surroundings where birdsong replaces city traffic and beautifully landscaped gardens create an atmosphere of complete relaxation. Nestled in the Constantia Winelands, the lodge combines the peaceful charm of the countryside with easy access to every major attraction in Cape Town thanks to the city’s excellent freeway network. Within a short drive you can be exploring Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden or the beaches of the Atlantic Seaboard, before returning to the serenity of Constantia.
History combined with modern amenities
One of the aspects that gives Glen Avon Lodge its unique character is its history. The original manor house is one of the area’s historic farmhouses, reflecting Constantia’s rich agricultural heritage. Today it houses the welcoming reception area, elegant guest lounge and dining room, while the accommodation has been sympathetically added throughout the expansive gardens. The result is an appealing blend of Cape history and contemporary comfort.
What impressed me most, however, was the sheer size of the accommodation. My suite featured a generously proportioned bedroom, an equally spacious marble bathroom with both a large bath and separate walk-in shower, and a substantial private balcony overlooking the flourishing gardens. The room was equipped with every modern convenience one could expect from a luxury boutique hotel, including air conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi, a Nespresso coffee machine and luxurious furnishings. Secure on-site parking made coming and going effortless.
The beautifully maintained grounds are every bit as impressive as the accommodation. Wide stretches of manicured lawn surround a large swimming pool complete with comfortable sun loungers, creating the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. Whether enjoying a good book, soaking up the Cape sunshine or simply listening to the sounds of nature, it is easy to forget that one of South Africa’s busiest cities is only minutes away.
Plenty to do
One of the great advantages of staying in Constantia is the wealth of excellent restaurants and wine estates nearby. The Constantia Wine Route is South Africa’s oldest wine-producing region and offers numerous opportunities for wine tasting within a few minutes of the lodge. During my visit, I particularly enjoyed a tasting at Steenberg Wine Estate, followed by dinner at Port Mykonos Greek Restaurant, both of which are highly recommended additions to any Constantia itinerary.
Each morning began with an excellent breakfast. Fresh seasonal fruit and wonderfully flaky croissants were followed by a perfectly prepared Full English breakfast, accompanied by a rich cappuccino. It was the ideal way to start another day exploring Cape Town. The lodge’s restaurant places considerable emphasis on fresh, quality ingredients and attentive service, something that was evident throughout my stay.
For travellers looking for a peaceful alternative to the busier tourist districts, Glen Avon Lodge is an outstanding choice. It offers the space to relax, luxurious accommodation, beautiful gardens, outstanding hospitality and easy access to everything Cape Town has to offer. Sometimes the best way to experience one of the world’s great cities is not to stay in the middle of it, but just far enough away to enjoy both its attractions and its tranquillity.
