The Marine in Hermanus has reintroduced its elegant Afternoon Tea experience, inviting guests to enjoy this timeless tradition against the spectacular backdrop of Walker Bay.
Few pleasures are as synonymous with a leisurely afternoon as a pot of perfectly brewed tea or coffee, freshly baked scones and an irresistible selection of sweet and savoury treats. In Hermanus, the Sun Lounge at The Marine is the perfect spot to linger over tea, treats and conversation, overlooking the ocean and the celebrated cliff path. Available every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Afternoon Tea at The Marine offers a relaxed yet refined way to experience one of Hermanus’ most iconic coastal settings.
The timing is particularly fitting as Hermanus is amid the renowned whale-watching season, which runs through to November. During this time, southern right whales return to these sheltered waters, making the area one of the world’s best destinations for land-based whale watching. Here at The Marine, guests may even spot whales and their calves while enjoying their afternoon tea.
The experience begins with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine on arrival, followed by savoury bites that include Mini Spinach & Feta Quiche; Crostini with crème fraîche lumpfish roe and garden herbs; and Tuna Tartare with capers and red onion. This is followed by The Marine’s legendary Scones with whipped cream, preserve and mature cheddar; and a selection of confectionary that include Mini Chocolate Banoffee Pie with chantilly cream; Craquelin Choux Puff with berry mousse; and Vanilla Whipped Ganache matcha gel with génoise sponge pistachio; to name but a few.
‘Afternoon tea is one of those wonderfully unhurried, cherished rituals’, says GM Melissa Theron. ‘Bringing it back to the Marine after the recent refurbishment of the hotel’s public areas, doubles up as even more reason to take a day trip from Cape Town, with the possibility of seeing whales just offshore.’
The Marine invites visitors to take tea, raise a glass and enjoy the elegant ambience of the newly refurbished hotel. Afternoon Tea at The Marine is available every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 14:00 to 17:00 at R415 per person, including a glass of sparkling wine. Bookings are essential, with a minimum of 24 hours’ notice required.
