Die Kapokbosskuur is a delightful converted barn located in the quaint village of Nieu Bethesda, about 50kms from Graaf Reinet, in the Eastern Cape.
Nieu Bethesda is probably most famous for the Owl House, known for its cement and glass statues, created by artist Helen Martins and Koos Malgas, and which is now a museum.
Accommodation at Die Kapokbosskuur
In keeping with the quirkiness of this delightful village is Die Kapokbosskuur. This comfortable self-catering unit is an old clay brick barn which has been converted into a unique cosy cottage, with modern facilities.
The open plan design sleeps two guests with one double bed which is located in the loft. With its large upstairs window, it is a great place to enjoy the view and breathe in the fresh Karoo air.
The bathroom has a shower, basin and toilet. The kitchen area is equipped with a bar fridge, a stove and a microwave.
There is also a patio and a braai area. But if you don’t feel like cooking, meals are available from a variety of venues around the village. Pets are welcome and there is parking on the premises.
Nearby Activities in Nieu Bethesda
The village is renowned for The Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre, which displays some of the latest fossil finds in the fossil rich Karoo. Here you will also be able to watch a demonstration of the method used to extract fossils.
There are craft shops and galleries, potteries, sculptures and bushmen paintings.
Activities include mountain biking, hiking, bird watching, or just sitting on the stoep. The air is fresh and clean and the night sky is an amazing spectacle of stars as there are no street lights to interfere with the view.
The area is a nature lover’s paradise and is home to the largest variety of succulents in the world.
