Situated between the village of Nottingham Road and the town of Mooi River, this six-hectare property promises an interlude of rest and relaxation and offers a tranquil escape whether for business or leisure travellers visiting this part of KZN.

Glen Ormond Country House will speak your language. Negotiating a balance between luxury and ‘homeliness’, four separate cottages, with private verandas and secure parking bays, face south overlooking the garden.

The Blue Quail and Black Grouse self-catering family cottages comprise of two bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom with shower, basin and toilet. The beds can be arranged either King-size or two singles per bedroom.  

There is a comfortable open plan area consisting of a lounge, dining room and fully equipped modern kitchenette. Flat-screen TV’s with DStv, microwaves, under-counter fridges, gas hob and electric ovens are standard in both these units.

To be properly prepared for the cooler winters, a fireplace, a bathroom heater, gas heater and electric under blankets are readily available to guests. The welcoming sherry doesn’t hurt either.

Each covered veranda has a lounger chair or two, a table and chairs for outside dining and a charcoal burning barbecue. Tongs and barbecue utensils provided.

The Green Hoopoe self-catering cottage has a lovely wooden deck veranda-lette with seating and a kettle barbecue. A Queen-size bed, bathroom en-suite with a shower and vanity and a separate toilet make this an ideal couples retreat.

Its open plan lounge, dining area and kitchenette are kitted out for a comfortable stay. Heating in this unit is by a portable gas heater, air conditioning and electric under blanket.

Meanwhile, the White Egret cottage is the pièce de résistance. This beautiful self-catering standalone cottage is ideal for a romantic getaway for a couple. A King-size bed, bathroom on suite, with shower, lounge and dining area and fully-equipped kitchenette means you can shut the door and have that special alone time.

Heating is provided by a gas heater, under-floor heating and electric under blanket.

The Red Robin suite is perfect for a quick bed and breakfast stay. This tastefully decorated and very comfortable suite faces west; it has a King-size bed, en-suite bathroom with shower, vanity and separate loo.

A tea and coffee station includes a kettle and a small bar fridge.  Heating in this unit is by the fireplace, air conditioner and electric under blanket.

Guest amenities in all the kitchens include fresh farm milk. Bathroom amenities are complimentary. However, if you choose to stay, in a self-catering unit or in a suite, breakfast is available to all guests, and is served in the privacy of each cottage. 

The focus is on fresh and local food, so menus are always a pleasant surprise.

The guest house has free Wi-Fi that can be accessed from each cottage. A laundry service is available upon request at a nominal fee.

Bird watching is a favourite activity for guests at Glen Ormond.  In particular spotting raptors has become a favourite pastime for regular visitors.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important. 

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table. 

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.
