The New Holme Country House- a great getaway in the Karoo

The Cape Country Routes’ charming 3-star New Holme Country House is a working sheep and game farm situated in the Karoo Gariep Nature Reserve, one of the two nature reserves of the newly branded Khoisan Karoo Conservancy. The conservancy is located eight kilometres off the N1 highway outside Hanover it is midway between Cape Town and Johannesburg, and between Upington/ Kgalagadi and the Garden Route.

The reserve is home to the only hippos in the Karoo and aside from the hippos which were re-introduced to the Karoo in 2005, Cape buffalo, Eland, Roan and Sable antelope also roam the reserve.

New Holme, known for its traditional Karoo dinners, underground wine cellar, sunset and night drives, the Shy Five and as a popular wedding venue accommodates 27 guests.

The comfortable en-suite rooms are all individually decorated, have electric blankets, air conditioning and tea and coffee facilities. Outdoors there is a pool – very welcome in the long hot summer months.

Activities at the New Holme Country House

Activities include a Karoo ‘Shy 5’ Night drive where you can see aardvark, aardwolf, black footed cat, porcupine and bat eared fox; daily Birding drives, a sundowner trip to the hippo pool and a post breakfast walk to see the Koi San etchings, while owner PC Ferreira regales stories on the history of the region.

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance. Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion. However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review. We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience? The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.
