Family-owned boutique and premium hotel group, Lion Roars Hotels & Lodges has unveiled a safari experience accessible to every traveller. Couples, solo adventurers and multigenerational families can enjoy its Big 5 Day Safaris at Amakhala Game Reserve, operated from Bukela Game Lodge and Hlosi Game Lodge. These full- and half-day safaris offer a rich, complete Big 5 encounter without needing an overnight stay, making them an ideal addition to any Eastern Cape itinerary.
Located just 50 minutes from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), the malaria-free Amakhala Game Reserve offers a safe, welcoming environment for all travellers. Children aged six and older are welcome on the Day Safaris, while private vehicles can be arranged for families travelling with younger children, allowing every guest — regardless of age or travel style — to enjoy the experience comfortably and confidently.
“Today’s traveller values flexibility,” says Vincent Bouwer, Chief Revenue Officer of Lion Roars Hotels & Lodges. “Whether you’re exploring the Eastern Cape on a tight schedule or simply seeking a day immersed in nature, our Day Safaris offer an effortless way to step into the wild.”
Guests begin their adventure at 09h00 with a warm welcome and orientation at the Day Safari Welcome Centre. At 09h30, they depart with an expert ranger for a guided morning game drive across Amakhala’s diverse landscapes – open plains, riverine valleys, and shaded thickets alive with wildlife, including the Big 5.
A relaxed two-course lunch follows at midday, creating time to pause, reconnect, and savour the morning’s sightings. The full-day option continues into the afternoon with a second guided drive, offering new photographic opportunities and a chance to encounter species not seen earlier in the day.
Two safari options are available:
The Half-Day Safari (R2,150 pp): morning drive and lunch
The Full-Day Safari (R2,750 pp): morning drive, lunch, and an afternoon drive
Bookings require at least 24 hours’ notice, with a minimum of two adults per vehicle.
The reserve is easily accessed via the N2 from Gqeberha. Clear signage leads travellers to the Leeuwenbosch Country House entrance, where guests are met and guided to the Day Safari Welcome Centre.
“Whether you’re travelling solo, with a partner, in a group, or introducing children to wildlife for the first time, these Day Safaris make the Eastern Cape wilderness wonderfully accessible,” adds Bouwer. “It’s a chance to experience the stillness, the excitement, and the unforgettable beauty of Amakhala – all in just one day.”
