UMLALAZI, KWA ZULU-NATAL – Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (Ezemvelo) hosted a poignant World Ranger Day event at uMlalazi Nature Reserve on Thursday, 31 July 2025, bringing together more than 150 dedicated rangers to honour their bravery and profound sacrifices in safeguarding South Africa’s irreplaceable wild spaces. This year’s global theme, “Rangers, Powering Transformative Conservation,” resonated deeply throughout the day’s activities, highlighting the pivotal role rangers played in meeting conservation needs.
The celebration was a vibrant mix of camaraderie, featuring activities designed to foster team spirit and acknowledge the physical and mental fortitude required for their demanding profession. Rangers participated in athletics, tug-of-war, volleyball, yoga, and precision drilling, showcasing their discipline and dedication.
This event was made possible through the invaluable partnership and generous sponsorship of WildTrust, WWF-SA, WildAct, and Msinsi Holdings, collaborating in a united front in supporting the guardians of our natural heritage.
The SAPS and SANDF also took part in the celebrations, proudly showcasing their discipline and expertise. A highlight of the event was the joint drill between the SAPS and the Rangers, which captivated the audience. With precision and flair, the SAPS band performed live music while the Rangers executed their drill in perfect synchrony to the rhythm of the instruments, creating a powerful and memorable display of unity and coordination.
A deeply moving segment of the day was the awards ceremony, which acknowledged the remarkable courage and unwavering commitment of rangers who had navigated challenging and high-pressure situations in the field.
“Rangers stand unequivocally on the frontline of wildlife conservation, serving as the last line of defence for many vulnerable species facing unprecedented threats,” shared Vuyiswa Radebe, Head Biodiversity Conservation Operations at Ezemvelo. “They also act as a vital bridge between protected areas and local communities, engaging proactively to address conservation needs in culturally relevant and mutually beneficial ways. This community-centric approach is crucial for long-term conservation success.”
Bongani Khumalo, Field Ranger at Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park, said, “The biggest challenge I face [as a ranger] is dealing with poachers and sometimes working in dangerous conditions, but even with these challenges, we stay strong because I know my work matters. World Ranger Day reminds me that we are not alone, rangers around the world are facing the same struggles and doing great work.”
Ezemvelo CEO, Mr Sihle Mkhize highlighted the immense risks rangers undertake daily. “To celebrate every win, no matter how small. It is of critical importance to note that rangers’ lives are on the thin green line every day. Taking a day to commemorate and celebrate them is not just mere recognition, but also to thank them for their everyday contribution to conservation,”
The Rangers Day event at uMlalazi Nature Reserve was an important reminder of the indispensable role rangers played in preserving KwaZulu-Natal’s biodiversity. Their work ensures that future generations will continue to experience and benefit from the country’s magnificent natural heritage.
