Experience Star Gazing at Rogge Cloof Guest Farm near Sutherland

Rogge Cloof Guest Farm is located in the Karoo near the town of Sutherland, the world renowned astrological centre of South Africa.

Set in the expansive plains of the Roggeveld, in a private nature reserve, the magnificent night skies have never seemed so close.

A number of interesting activities are available. These include basic star gazing, cheetah tracking, a guided nature tour and a stop at the fossil field, a walking tour to the volcano, wine tasting, cycling and swimming.

Accommodation at Rogge Cloof Guest Farm

The luxurious open plan units are ideal for couples, and include dinner and breakfast. These ensuite rooms feature a king size bed, a fire place, tea/coffee facilities and safe parking.

Self-Catering units are ideal for families or friends travelling together. These include an open plan kitchen and living area, a fire place and gas stove, two bathrooms and an outside braai area.

Accommodation is cosy and warm with thick blankets, hot water bottles, and fire places for use in the snowy Sutherland winters. Large windows look out over the dam where the springbok come to drink.

Dormitory style, self-catering, accommodation is offered for educational groups. Though mattresses are supplied, these groups would need to bring their own bedding.

Rogge Cloof Guest Farm, being an eco-estate, operates on solar power. So guests need to be aware that appliances such as hair dryers, microwaves and electric kettles are not available.

There are, however, power sockets for recharging phones and laptops.

Dining at Rogge Cloof

A full breakfast and a three course dinner are served daily, at specific times, in the Rittersaal Dining Hall.

This venue can comfortably seat 50 guests and is perfectly suited for functions, weddings and other celebrations. There is also a patio which provides extra space for outside dining around a bonfire.

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance. Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion. However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review. We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.
