Zimbali Lodge proudly announces the official opening of Eleven Tribes, a restaurant that marks a defining moment in the Lodge’s renewal and the wider North Coast hospitality landscape. Officially launched on 21 January 2026, Eleven Tribes celebrates South African culture and heritage through menus that are thoughtful, refined and firmly rooted in tradition.
The launch signals a bold new chapter for Zimbali Lodge as it continues its evolution into a world class destination. “Eleven Tribes represents our commitment to redefining luxury through authentic African storytelling and immersive guest experiences,” says Bailey Bhima, General Manager at Zimbali Lodge. “It reflects how the Lodge is evolving, while remaining true to its sense of place and heritage.”
After a period of restoring and reimagining the property’s dining offering, Eleven Tribes succeeds the estate’s iconic Thandi Restaurant. Drawing inspiration from South Africa’s eleven official language groups, the restaurant presents menus that blend indigenous ingredients with contemporary culinary techniques, creating a refined dining experience that is both culturally rich and globally relevant.
A sophisticated take on local culinary traditions
Set within Zimbali’s coastal forest and overlooking the ocean, Eleven Tribes offers menus that honour South Africa’s culinary staples through a modern lens. Breakfast, lunch and dinner showcase seasonal produce and indigenous ingredients, ranging from communal lunch plates inspired by local street food to a signature tasting menu highlighting region specific flavours and cooking techniques.
“Eleven Tribes is our way of putting South African ingredients and traditions on the plate in a way that feels fresh and considered,” says Executive Chef Malusi Makhize. “Guests can expect bold, balanced dishes that nod to familiar flavours while offering new interpretations.”
More than a dining venue, Eleven Tribes has been designed as a cultural journey. From menu curation to design elements and service style, every detail reflects South Africa’s diverse heritage and storytelling traditions. “Each dish and design choice is intentional,” Bhima explains. “We wanted the experience to be emotionally engaging, something guests connect with, not just consume.”
Strengthening Zimbali Lodge’s luxury offering
The introduction of Eleven Tribes forms a key part of Zimbali Lodge’s broader transformation under Dream Hotels and Resorts. Alongside upgrades to guest rooms, public areas and conferencing facilities, the restaurant reinforces the Lodge’s repositioning as a refined five star destination that balances sophistication with a strong local identity.
“Today’s travellers are seeking experiences that feel meaningful and authentic,” says Bhima. “Food has become a primary driver in how guests choose destinations, and Eleven Tribes elevates our culinary offering to meet international standards while remaining deeply rooted in South African culture” she adds.
Beyond its daily service, Eleven Tribes offers a series of immersive culinary experiences, including chef led masterclasses, tasting journeys and seasonal events. These experiences are designed to deepen guests’ understanding of the stories, techniques and ingredients behind each dish, transforming meals into memorable moments.
“Eleven Tribes embodies Dream Hotels and Resorts’ vision of experience led hospitality,” Bhima adds. “It positions dining as a journey, one that enhances the overall guest experience and leaves a lasting impression long after guests depart.”
Eleven Tribes is open to both lodge guests and the public, with reservations available via the Zimbali Lodge website. The restaurant offers daily service for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with guests encouraged to book in advance, particularly for the tasting menu and special culinary events.
