Early start to the festive season, as Cableway celebrates 96 years of operation

TMACC Wins Silver for waste innovation at Responsible Tourism Awards Africa

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is celebrating its 96th birthday this October, marking the company’s unofficial start to the end-of-year festive season in Cape Town. Since its inauguration on 4 October 1929, the Cableway has provided more than 32 million visitors with safe, accessible, and unforgettable journeys to the summit of one of the
New7Wonders of Nature.

As the team prepares for the peak summer months that are just around the corner, they are inviting locals to celebrate their milestone birthday before the December and January influx of visitors. Final checks and preparations are underway to ensure everything is in top shape to welcome the tens of thousands of excited local and international tourists expected in the Mother City for the holidays, and this includes the anticipation that the 33 millionth visitor will soon also be welcomed to the mountain.

Cape Town’s tourism sector is anticipating another record-breaking festive season, a trend highlighted by strong growth earlier in the year. Data from Cape Town International Airport has previously shown significant year-on-year growth in passenger arrivals, and the momentum is expected to continue.

*       In 2024, Cape Town welcomed over 2.4 million overnight visitors, contributing an estimated R24.5 billion to the local economy.
*       More recent trends show the city recording a 6% year-on-year growth in international arrivals and a 5% rise in bed nights sold, signalling strong demand.
*       The overall outlook for South Africa’s tourism for the year suggests the industry could well surpass pre-pandemic 2019 visitor numbers.

TMACC looks forward to playing its part in this thriving sector, welcoming visitors to the world-renowned summit.

To thank the local community for their enduring support and to encourage South Africans to explore their own backyard, TMACC is rolling out the Local is Lekker special.

Running for the entire month of October 2025, South African citizens can enjoy significantly discounted return tickets to the summit:

* R250 for adults
* R100 for children (ages 4-17)

“This 96-year milestone isn’t just about reflecting on our history; it’s about sharing the mountain with the people who call this country home,” says Wahida Parker, Managing Director of TMACC. “The Local is Lekker special is our way of sharing the iconic New 7 Wonder of Nature with all South Africans and encouraging locals to be tourists in their own city before the summer rush begins.”

For nearly a century, the Cableway has been a key driver of local tourism and a pillar of support for local communities.

*       Community Upliftment: TMACC supports local communities through its educational programme, Class in the Clouds, making the mountain accessible to learners. Furthermore, 97% of retail products sold are sourced locally, supporting gifted artisans and entrepreneurs.
*       Conservation and Sustainability: TMACC remains committed to preserving the delicate mountain ecosystem. TMACC’s past relationship with the Kuyasa Housing Project has funded energy-efficient installations in over 2,100 homes. Looking ahead, TMACC will deepen its sustainability efforts by offsetting carbon emissions through waste management at the Stellenbosch Recycling Plant, alongside ongoing initiatives like the annual #TakeAHike
clean-up campaign.
*       Industry Recognition: The company’s dedication to service excellence continues to be recognised, including being voted Best Tourist Attraction in the Kfm Best of the Cape Awards for the fourth consecutive year, and securing titles like Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction at the World Travel Awards.

As part of the birthday celebrations, TMACC will host its annual Charity Golf Day at Atlantic Beach Golf Estate on 21 November 2025. The event brings together partners for a day of sport and vital fundraising.

The event is limited to just 120 players. It will cost R9 000 to enter a fourball, and waterhole sponsorships are available at R10 000 each.  Funds raised will support two organisations that play a critical role in safeguarding the natural heritage of Table Mountain and its surrounds:
Wilderness Search and Rescue and Volunteer Wildfire Services.

“The Charity Golf Day is a tangible way for us to invest in the sustainability of our communities and environment. By taking part, companies and individuals are helping us empower the very organisations that protect the Mountain and ensure its long-term preservation,” says Parker.

“It has been our privilege and honour to transport millions of visitors to the top of our beloved Table Mountain, and we could not have done it without the incredible support of countless partners, suppliers, industry colleagues, and of course our teams of volunteers and staff members. Thank you Cape Town for 96 great years, and we look forward to an even better future,” says Parker.

About us

Actually, Home Food and Travel offers a lot more than just reviews of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.  We also visit great destinations, receive advice from interior designers and stop to smell the roses and taste the coffee.

Our team of journalists are seasoned travels and love visiting the myriad of exciting places around South Africa.  Whether it is off the beaten track or in the heart of the top attractions of the country, we’ll be there,

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you on the road!
