Conveniently located within a three-hour drive from Durban and a six-hour journey from Johannesburg, Manyoni Private Game Reserve is one of KwaZulu Natal’s largest privately owned game reserves. Spanning 23,000 hectares, this reserve is the collaborative effort of seventeen committed landowners who dismantled their fences in 2004, forging a single, expansive protected habitat for our wildlife.
Nestled in the heart of Zululand, a region that is world renowned for its spectacular game viewing, rich cultural heritage, and conservation history, Manyoni Reserve holds a significant place.
Initially established as part of the World Wildlife Fund’s Black Rhino Range Expansion Initiative, Manyoni has since evolved into a premier big five safari destination in KZN, marked by a steadfast dedication to endangered species conservation.
Zululand Conservation Trust
Established in 2011, the Zululand Conservation Trust partnered with Manyoni Private Game Reserve with a commitment to community upliftment and the conservation of endangered species – specifically black and white rhino, pangolin and wild dog, as well as the newly established Zululand Rhino Orphanage.
The Trust invites volunteers who have a true love for wildlife and conservation to be involved in some behind the scenes conservation and reserve management activities that might be happening during their stay.
Only volunteers who are physically fit, able to work as a team and are prepared for hard work and long hours, will be considered. Volunteers will also have to make their own travel arrangements.
Activities are many and varied and may include assisting with boma cleaning, K9 training and tracking, wildlife monitoring with telemetry equipment, camera trap set up and checks, community work, night patrols, and many more. There may be game counts and the possibility to participate in veterinary work.
Accommodation and Facilities for Volunteers
A newly built tented camp consists of accommodation for ten volunteers. Each tent has an ensuite bathroom and sleeps two with bedding and bath towels provided. Electricity and free Wi-Fi and fully equipped kitchen provides space for volunteers to cook their own meals.
The Volunteer program is a great opportunity to make a difference and create lasting memories. Every volunteer contributes hands on to conservation projects that have a real impact on communities and the environment.
