In 2004, Niel de Bois opened De Vette Mossel Grootbrak in Mossel Bay with the vision of providing families with a unique experience. Soon after opening, the restaurant became a highly sought-after destination for diners who craved something extraordinary. And when Niel partnered with Nikki Greyer, who brought her ever-helpful nature and dedication, De Vette Mossel Grootbrak became more than a seafood restaurant; it’s a seaside tradition.
De Vette Mossel Grootbrak serves up family seafood feasts

At De Vette’s, the experience begins the moment diners arrive. With the waves nearby, diners kick off their shoes, feel the sand beneath their feet and lekker kuier!
While most restaurants offer their diners an à la carte menu, De Vette Mossel Grootbrak serves their seafood delights buffet-style. It is a feast like no other with seven courses, thirteen dishes, and three hours long. Each dish is prepared in front of diners on an open fire, and combined with the playful atmosphere, there is a sense of magic in every detail.
The seafood buffet serves up a variety of mouthwatering dishes. Their fresh pot brood comes with farm butter and sweet apricot jam, while mussel meat comes with onions, lots of garlic, and farm butter. The West Coast Snoek is prepared West Coast style, and the seafood pot comes with three types of fish— calamari strips, mussels, and prawn tails. Diners who don’t enjoy seafood will love the meat potjie. Topping it all off, the dining experience ends with watermelon, sweet melon, tropical fruit, traditional moer coffee, South African Rooibos tea and koeksisters.
Additional meals include the Catch of the Day, a calamari steak, West Coast rock lobster, whole prawns, and oysters. Don’t worry, if something is running low, there is more on the way!
The restaurant is completely family-friendly with a variety of activities to keep young diners engaged. In addition to full access to the beach, the restaurant offers an in-house play area featuring two wooden lighthouses, catwalks, a sandpit, and a climbing wall. Traditional old-school games, a hammock, trampoline, swings, a giant bird nest, swing ball, and even a zipline make up part of the playhouse.
