Break your journey with an Ice Cold Beer and a Light lunch at Route 62 Brewing Company

Route 62 is a beautiful drive through the parched landscape of the Karoo which can get very hot during the day. A great place to cool off and enjoy some refreshment is the Route 62 Brewing Company in Montagu.

The brewery is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 8pm and offers tasting and brewery tours too.

Of course if you are driving you want to ensure that you line your stomach with some good food before tasting the brews. Thankfully they have a restaurant with a great menu.

On those hot summer days one can sit in the shady courtyard, or Biergarten, or in cooler weather, inside or at the bar.

The restaurant has a comprehensive menu and includes burgers, including vegetarian options, lamb chops, pork ribs, calamari, pizzas, platters and snacks.

A favourite are the sweet and savoury waffles with their generous toppings

Desserts include homemade ice cream, and caramel and banana spring rolls.

Craft Beers at Route 62 Brewing Company

Route 62 Brewing Company has a range of craft beers. These include their ‘Blue Point’ which is alight crisp pale ale. The ‘62’ is their craft brown ale, and ‘The Old Fort’, a light crisp lager. ‘The Blondie’ is a cape inspired Wiessbier. This is crafted in the style of classic Weissbier which is brewed in European style.

A selection of red and white wine, as well as spirits and cocktails are also available.

They hosts regular events, so watch out for those on their website and social media pages.

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance. Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion. However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.
