A Story in Every Sip: High Tea Comes to Tintswalo Summer House

Tintswalo Summer House has introduced the timeless tradition of Afternoon Tea, served in the beautifully restored historic hotel overlooking False Bay’s Glencairn Bay. Available on Fridays and Saturdays only, Tintswalo Summer House High Tea invites guests to slow down, savour the moment, indulge in sweet and savoury treats, and discover a collection of special teas inspired by the people, history and seaside spirit of this much-loved property.

Priced at R495 per person, the High Tea begins with a welcome glass of bubbly before guests settle into an elegant spread of delicate savouries, freshly baked scones and indulgent sweet confectionary. Served in the garden on beautiful days, or indoors when the weather doesn’t play along, the experience is accompanied by a choice of hot beverage from Summer House’s curated selection of loose-leaf teas, coffee or hot chocolate.

The menu brings together classic High Tea favourites with a distinctly South African touch. Delicate treats include Cape Malay bobotie spring rolls, Coronation chicken pies, chilled potato and leek soup, and prawn and avocado puffs. Finger sandwiches offer a selection of refined classics: cucumber and cream cheese; Franschhoek smoked trout with cream cheese and cucumber; grass-fed roast beef with caramelised onions and whole-grain mustard aioli; and classic egg mayonnaise with chives.

No High Tea would be complete without scones! The scone basket features freshly baked scones served with fresh cream, clotted cream and assorted jams and cheese, alongside savoury cheese and herb scones. For something sweet, guests can expect raspberry macarons, lemon meringue tarts, classic pecan tarts, red velvet cake and the indulgent chef’s choice cake of the day.

At the heart of the experience is a remarkable tea menu, curated in collaboration with Nigiro Tea. At Summer House, tea is an experience with each blend lovingly chosen to tell a story of the historic Glencairn Hotel, the bold women behind Tintswalo and the colourful, soul-filled house by the sea. Adding to the experience is Summer House’s tea sommeliers Junias Manomano and Clement Moyo – part storytellers and part flavour guides who are always ready with a recommendation.

Among the most personal teas are the signature family blends, created as a tribute to the women whose vision and influence have shaped Tintswalo. Blue Horizon, a Japanese Sencha from Shizuoka blended with mango, passionfruit and citrus, is dedicated to CEO, Lisa Goosen. Fresh, uplifting and tropical, the tea reflects her intuitive warmth and quiet strength, with every sip intended to feel like a conversation with her – rich, comforting and memorable. Cam in Colour is a spectacular flowering tea of hand-tied green and white tea with jasmine and chrysanthemum blossoms, celebrates Camlyn Johnston’s bold design instinct, love of colour and the achievement of bringing Summer House to life through the restoration of the historic hotel. Graceful Gaye, a Rooibos, lemon, ginger and pandan blend, honours Gaye Corbett, the matriarch and co-founder who, together with her husband Ernest, built Tintswalo from a dream into a lasting legacy. Its zesty lemon, warming ginger and soft pandan sweetness reflect her elegant, grounded character. Together, the three teas celebrate three generations of bold vision, quiet wisdom and endless style.

Other blends in the collection draw inspiration directly from Summer House and include 1904 African Breakfast Blend, which pays homage to the year the hotel was built, with a bold black tea combining leaves from Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania. The Seaside Garden infusion combines chamomile, lemongrass and apple in a soothing nod to Glencairn’s gardens and seaside tranquillity, while South-Easterly Wind captures the freshness of the winds sweeping through Glencairn with spearmint, lemongrass, moringa and buchu.

At Tintswalo Summer House High Tea is an invitation to linger; to reconnect over beautiful food, discover a new tea and experience the history and character of Summer House in a relaxed and elegant setting.

Tintswalo Summer House High Tea is served on Fridays and Saturdays between 12:00 and 16:00 at R495 per person, including a welcome glass of bubbles and a choice of hot beverage. About us

Actually, Home Food and Travel offers a lot more than just reviews of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.  We also visit great destinations, receive advice from interior designers and stop to smell the roses and taste the coffee.

Our team of journalists are seasoned travels and love visiting the myriad of exciting places around South Africa.  Whether it is off the beaten track or in the heart of the top attractions of the country, we’ll be there,

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you on the road!
