Royal Aces Bistro, located on the ground floor at the food court entrance of the Bay West shopping mall, serves excellent curry. In fact, I would venture to say that it serves some of the best curry that I have ever tasted.
I am a curry nut and have eaten in some truly fantastic curry restaurants. The Royal Aces is right up there with my top three.
At first glance one is not aware that the Royal Aces Bistro even exists because it shares the same entrance as the Royal Aces Casino.
Once inside the polite waitresses will direct you to a table. The décor is smart and contemporary with grey, white and dark wood dominating. The restaurant is well lit in day light hours thanks to the opaque glass exterior wall and has comforting lighting in the evening.
My daughter and I visited Royal Aces Bistro for a recent Sunday lunch and thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the service and, of course, each other’s company.
The Royal Aces Bistro menu
The menu at the Royal Aces Bistro is comprehensive and designed to suite all tastes and lifestyles. Expect to find steaks, burgers, salads, fish, pasta, lamb and a delicious array of deserts on the main menu.
There are a variety of vegetarian dishes including Dal Makhani, a vegan Black Bean Veggie Burger and a mushroom kebab starter.
If you visit during the day you will also be offered a breakfast and light lunch menu.
It’ is, however, the curries and the Tandoor menu that are the main features. The Royal Aces Bistro is fitted with a traditional Indian Tandoor oven that, together with the chef’s incredible skill, results in some fantastic dishes.
My daughter and I started with chicken samosas and fried calamari. The samosas were served with a mild and a hot dipping sauce and were fantastic. The calamari was fresh, fried to perfection and delicious.
My daughter chose the prawn curry and I opted for the lamb curry. We both choose naan bread as an accompaniment. Both curries were superb.
On the manager’s advice, my daughter chose the chocolate brownies for desert. Because she couldn’t stop raving about this desert I had a taste too. I soon found myself going in for a second, third and fourth ‘taste’ as well, so good were these brownies.
Wine and cocktail list
The bar is modern and well stocked and serves a variety of traditional and local speciality cocktails. There is a combination of imported and local beers with a few craft beers thrown in too.
The wine list is simple but comprehensive and also includes French Champagne.
After our lunch we took a walkabout of the mall and bumped into some friends. I found myself raving about the curries at the Royal Aces Bistro and giving this restaurant a big thumbs-up.
