Makumu means “endless views” in Xitsonga, an apt name for a lodge where the surrounding wilderness takes centre stage. The spacious Impi Suites offer a sitting area and a deck with stunning bushveld views, with twin bed options available. Guests settle into their suite after a day outdoors, take in the view, or enjoy the outdoor shower as the sounds of the bush carry on around them.
Unique Ways to Experience the Bush
For many guests, the highlight is time spent exploring the reserve. Guided game drives offer opportunities to look for the Big Five and learn about the animals, birds and ecosystems that make this landscape so compelling. Every outing is different, with sightings shaped by the rhythms of the wild rather than a fixed itinerary.
Makumu also offers unusual ways to observe its surroundings. At iThumbela, the photographic bunker, visitors can watch wildlife at the waterhole from close to eye level, creating a memorable perspective for photographers and nature lovers. The Windmill Hide provides another place to pause and watch at your own pace. For a different view, guests can arrange scenic helicopter or microlight flights.
Relaxation Beyond the Game Drives
Back at the lodge, the experience continues beyond the game drives. The pool offers a refreshing break during warm afternoons, while the upper lounge and viewing deck invite guests to unwind.
