Take Your Time in Velddrif: A Spring Escape of Local Flavours and Simple Pleasures

A leisurely breakfast, a browse through a local market and something delicious to take home. A quiet moment watching birds beside the Berg River, followed by an afternoon exploring farm stalls and coastal villages. This October, Velddrif invites you to enjoy a spring getaway with time to linger.

Make Velddrif your base for a weekend of small discoveries. From Bokkomlaan to Port Owen and nearby Dwarskersbos, there are plenty of reasons to stop, explore and stay a little longer.

Discover the flavour of the town

Begin along historic Bokkomlaan, where the traditional bokkom industry tells a story of life beside the Berg River. Try this distinctive salted and dried fish, take in the riverside setting and enjoy a part of Velddrif that rewards an unhurried visit.

Close to Bokkomlaan, stop at Kokerboom Kaas to discover artisan cheeses before heading to the Laaiplek harbour. The Light House Gift Shop & Deli offers another reason to linger: its well-known, delicious ice cream! Choose your favourite flavour and take a moment to enjoy the harbour setting. Browse the gifts at the Harbour Market, something for everyone.

There is pleasure in leaving enough time for these stops. Ask about a local product, discover a new flavour and take home something that will remind you of your West Coast escape.

Spend time at the markets

From morning browsing to an evening outing, the local markets offer a chance to meet traders, discover something delicious and enjoy the community atmosphere.

The Port Owen morning market takes place on the first Saturday of each month, while the Port Owen night market brings an afternoon and evening experience on the last Saturday. The Dwarskersbos market also takes place on the last Saturday of the month, giving visitors a reason to make a weekend of exploring the area.

Browse at your own pace, enjoy the conversations and take home a local find. Leave time for lunch or a leisurely stop between outings.

Follow the road to another discovery

Make the journey part of your getaway with stops at Tolbossie and Die Skooltjie Padstal. Farm stalls offer a welcome reason to pull over, stretch your legs and browse before continuing your drive.

For a countryside outing, head along the R45 to Kleine Hopefield Destination Farm, situated outside Hopefield. This Bergrivier Tourism member offers another destination to add to your exploration beyond Velddrif. Contact the farm ahead of your visit to find out what is available and plan your stop.

Choose a few places that catch your interest and leave yourself enough time to enjoy each one.

Leave room for nature

Between the food stops and browsing, take a quiet moment beside the Berg River. The Ramsar-designated estuary supports resident and migratory birds, with pelicans, flamingos, herons and waders among the species visitors may encounter.

Bring binoculars or simply pause along Bokkomlaan and watch the riverbanks. For those who want to spend more time birdwatching, Kuifkopvisvanger Farm and nearby Rocherpan Nature Reserve offer further possibilities to explore.

A walk on Dwarskersbos Beach makes another gentle addition to the weekend, with open coastal views and time to enjoy the fresh air.

Make a weekend of it

Stay in Velddrif, Port Owen or Dwarskersbos and give yourself another morning to explore. Enjoy breakfast without rushing, visit a market, discover a deli and follow a country road to your next stop.

This spring, take your time in Velddrif. Come for the local flavours and small discoveries and stay for the pleasure of a weekend enjoyed at your own pace.

About us

Actually, Home Food and Travel offers a lot more than just reviews of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.  We also visit great destinations, receive advice from interior designers and stop to smell the roses and taste the coffee.

Our team of journalists are seasoned travels and love visiting the myriad of exciting places around South Africa.  Whether it is off the beaten track or in the heart of the top attractions of the country, we’ll be there,

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you on the road!
