The Rosebank hotel takes the continental title fourteen months after opening, on the strength of a team that prepares for every guest by name
Park Hyatt Johannesburg has been voted Africa’s Leading New Hotel 2026 at the World Travel Awards, announced at the Africa Gala Ceremony held at Diamonds Bijoux in Zanzibar, Tanzania, on 28 August.
The recognition arrives just over a year after the hotel opened on 1 July 2025 as the Park Hyatt brand’s third address in Africa.
For a house of 31 rooms, the award reads less as a milestone than as a measure of how the team has settled into its work. Park Hyatt Johannesburg has built its service standards around what happens before a guest reaches the door. Each arrival is worked through in advance: previous stays are read, preferences are logged and carried forward, dietary needs reach the kitchen days ahead, and rooms are set the night before rather than on the morning of check-in. Housekeeping, concierge, front office and the kitchen sit in the same daily briefing, so a request made to one person is known to all of them by the time it matters.
That preparation is invisible when it works. A guest who mentioned a preference for a firmer pillow eighteen months ago in another city finds it waiting. A returning couple is given the room they liked, on the floor they liked, without having to ask twice.

The hotel occupies a restored 1930s residence in Rosebank, a building shaped by the architectural influence of Sir Herbert Baker. Arched colonnades, high ceilings and wide verandahs were retained through the restoration, and the property is arranged around an open-air courtyard anchored by a mature jacaranda and a heated pool. A locally curated art and design programme runs floor by floor, drawing on the region’s botanical history and archival collections. The hotel’s restaurant, Room 32, cooks over open fire under Executive Chef Karel Jacobs and Chef de Cuisine Chrizelle Venter, with a menu built around South African produce and a wine list weighted to Cape estates.

About the award
The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to recognise excellence across every sector of travel and tourism. The Wall Street Journal described the programme as the Oscars of the travel industry, and the description has followed it since. Winners are decided by a vote of qualified travel and tourism professionals worldwide, weighted alongside a public vote, which makes a win an endorsement by the industry rather than a jury decision.
The programme runs a series of regional gala ceremonies each year, with regional winners going forward to contest the Grand Final. The Africa Gala Ceremony 2026 was hosted at Diamonds Bijoux in Zanzibar on 28 August, in partnership with Visit Zanzibar, the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism and the Tanzania Tourist Board.
Park Hyatt Johannesburg took the Africa’s Leading New Hotel title against a field of nominees drawn from Botswana, Kenya, Morocco, Rwanda, Tanzania and South Africa. Previous holders of the category include Singita Milele in Tanzania in 2025 and Angama Amboseli in Kenya in 2024.
The World Travel Awards title follows a run of recognition for the property. The hotel received a One Key distinction from the MICHELIN Guide in 2025, was named to TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2026, and holds a Booking.com Traveller Review Award for 2026.
