As Gauteng shivers under a layer of winter frost and the Cape keeps a keen eye out for the next cold front’s lashing rain, from KuGompo City to Port St. Johns, locals and savvy travellers are soaking up what many believe to be the best time of year on the lush Wild Coast.
While many visitors know Morgan Bay Hotel for its warm hospitality and spectacular ocean views, it’s also the perfect gateway to one of South Africa’s most adventure-filled coastlines. From cliff-top hikes and horseback rides to whale watching, surfing and hidden beaches, many of the Wild Coast’s best experiences lie just minutes from the hotel.
With the sun rising out of the Indian Ocean, here winter brings a few magical months of warm days and blue skies that are tailor-made for exploring and adventure. Ramble amid the rock pools with kids, or tackle the cliffs and dunes that define the coastline around Morgan Bay and Kei Mouth. Seafood? You can indulge at local eateries or cast a line to catch it for yourself.
Throw in the fact that the only traffic you’re likely to encounter is a herd of cows meandering along the sand, and it’s not hard to see why winter is the secret season for discovering the Wild Coast. Whether it’s your first visit or a long-awaited return, here are 10 ways to explore South Africa’s most beautiful coastline.
Take a hike
The rolling hills of the Wild Coast are paradise for hikers. The four-night Pondo Trail is the poster child for luxury slackpacking, while the Wild Coast Meander takes in the historic family-owned hotels that have long welcomed travellers along this coastline. For an unforgettable day-hike, the clifftop trail between Morgan Bay and Double Mouth offers panoramic sea views, birdwatching and a wander through a rare pocket of indigenous forest.
Saddle up
From the stables at Kei Mouth Country Club, Wild Coast Horse Trails offers a range of horseback adventures. Beginners can enjoy gentle, walk-only beach rides, while more experienced riders can book the Morgan Bay Cliff-Top Ride, a two-and-a-half-hour route combining beach, cliff-top views and photo stops high above the Indian Ocean. Full-day trails include lunch, ferry crossings and waterfall swims, with multi-day itineraries available for keen riders.
Paddle out
There’s no shortage of great surf along the Wild Coast, and winter – with its clean swell and offshore winds – is the best time to paddle out. One of the most memorable waves on the Wild Coast is Keightley’s, a right-hander that peels around the rocky point west of Morgan Bay. With a technical take-off over a reef, this is one best left to experienced surfers, but it’s a secret spot that cranks out world-class waves when conditions are right.
Ride the Pont
Cross the Great Kei River the old-fashioned way: by pontoon. The Kei Mouth ferry nudges cars, hikers and cyclists from the village towards the shores of the former Transkei, turning a river crossing into a micro–Wild Coast adventure. It is one of the last working vehicle pontoons in South Africa and remains a popular gateway for road-trippers heading north towards Coffee Bay. Don’t forget the handbrake!
Go whale-watching
From June to November, Humpback and Southern right whales migrate along this coastline, while dolphins are resident year-round. It's not unusual to spot them from your hotel breakfast table, but for the best views, pack a pair of binoculars and climb the kranzes and dunes around Morgan Bay and Kei Mouth.
Dangle on a rope
Morgan Bay Adventures makes the most of the area’s dramatic coastal krantzes, offering abseiling and rock-climbing excursions. The highlight is a 24-metre abseil high above the ocean, with the waves and sea air adding drama to your descent. Climbers can choose from top-rope, sport and ‘trad’ routes.
Feeling twitchy?
With a mix of estuaries and rivers, coastal ecosystems and forested dune belts, the Wild Coast is a haven for birders, with African fish eagles, kingfishers and hundreds of coastal and forest species waiting to be added to your Lifer list. Pack your binoculars and take a stroll, or book a Fish Eagle Cruise on the Great Kei River to add a few extra waterbirds to the tally.
Search for buried treasure
At Double Mouth Nature Reserve, the sand sometimes shares its secrets. In 1608, the Portuguese galleon Santo Espiritu was wrecked offshore, scattering her cargo along what is now known as Treasure Beach. After big tides or winter storms, sharp-eyed walkers can search the sands for colourful carnelian beads, once part of the ship’s cargo and now polished by 400 years of pounding surf.
Take a little me-time
After all that adventure, you might be in the mood for a little pampering. The Milkwood Spa in Morgan Bay offers a fantastic range of body and facial treatments in a cosy wellness space. Choose between a hideaway in one of the three treatment rooms or enjoy your massage on the sun-splashed deck to a soundtrack of the sea. The Signature is the Synergy Four-hand Massage, sure to soothe tired muscles. There’s a sauna and steam room on site too. Or simply settle onto the hotel’s deck with a good book, a cup of coffee or signature cocktail and let the sweeping ocean views do what they do best – slow you down.
Sip on craft beer
After a day out, you’ve earned a cold one. And there’s no better beer to drink on the Wild Coast than Emerald Vale Brewing Co., a farm-based craft brewery outside Chintsa. Their four ales are perfect for winter sips, and you’ll find them at the farm brewery and selected restaurants in the region. The Deck in Morgan Bay lets you pair craft brew with a menu of beer-friendly food and fine sea views.
“For 80 years, our family has had the privilege of welcoming guests to Morgan Bay and watching them fall in love with this remarkable stretch of coastline. While the hotel has evolved over the decades, the magic of the Wild Coast has remained the same,” says Richard Warren-Smith, the grandson of the original hotel founder Ivan Warren-Smith and the third generation of the family to run it. “Winter is one of our favourite seasons to share with guests because it’s quieter, beautifully mild and the perfect time to explore everything the area has to offer.”
