Launch of Elephant Point River Suites set to redefine safari in the Greater Kruger

A bold new chapter in South African luxury travel will unfold on 15 May 2026 with the official opening of Elephant Point River Suites, a sophisticated, villa-style hotel experience set along one of the most coveted stretches of the Sabie River.

Brought to market by Legacy Group, one of South Africa’s leading hospitality companies known for creating iconic destination experiences, Elephant Point River Suites introduces a new level of immersive luxury to the Greater Kruger region. The development builds on the success of the already established Elephant Point Safari Villas, enhancing the reserve’s offering with a fully serviced, all-inclusive hospitality experience.

Positioned within the Greater Kruger ecosystem, just five kilometres from the Paul Kruger Gate, Elephant Point Private Reserve spans over three kilometres of prime, Kruger-facing Sabie River frontage. This unique location, combined with carefully preserved wildlife corridors, allows for an uninterrupted flow of game across the landscape—creating a rare safari experience where nature unfolds organically around guests.

Safari, Done Differently

At its core, Elephant Point River Suites is defined by a singular philosophy: Safari Done Differently.

Here, the traditional model of chasing wildlife sightings is reimagined. Instead, the landscape itself becomes a living theatre. Elephants, hippos, antelope and a host of other species move freely along the riverbanks, visible directly from private terraces, pools, and communal spaces. It is an experience that is both effortless and deeply immersive—where guests are not merely observers, but part of the unfolding story.

The development has been carefully designed to enhance this connection to nature. Architectural elements such as tunnels, bridges, and concealed pathways allow wildlife to move freely through the reserve while offering guests unique vantage points from which to experience them. Every arrival, every pathway, and every view has been choreographed to heighten this sense of theatre.

Accommodation

Elephant Point River Suites introduces a refined approach to safari accommodation through its collection of villa-style suites.

Departing from the conventional hotel format, each suite has been designed as a private sanctuary – offering generous space, layered living areas, and uninterrupted views of the Sabie River and surrounding plains. Ranging from 122 to 293 square metres, the suites feature open-plan interiors, private terraces, plunge pools, and dedicated study areas, catering equally to leisure travellers and those seeking a longer, more flexible stay.

This “home away from home” approach is complemented by the seamless service of a 5-star plus  hotel. At the heart of the guest experience is a dedicated 24-hour butler service, ensuring that every detail – from in-suite dining to activity bookings – is handled with ease and precision.

Culinary Excellence

The food and beverage offering at Elephant Point River Suites is set to be a standout feature of the property.

The culinary programme has been developed under the guidance of acclaimed two-star Michelin chef Conrad Gallagher, through his consultancy Food Concepts 360. The result is a sophisticated yet grounded dining experience centred around the concept of modern African cuisine.

The signature restaurant, SAN, celebrates fire-led cooking, seasonal ingredients, and a deep connection to the African landscape. Guests can expect a dynamic menu that evolves with seasonality and sustainability. Complementing this is TILO, a cocktail lounge and social dining space offering a more relaxed, share-style menu paired with signature cocktails inspired by indigenous botanicals. Together, these venues create a holistic culinary journey that balances refinement with authenticity.

Wellness, Community and Conservation

Wellness at Elephant Point River Suites addresses mind, body and soul.

The Elephant Point Spa offers immersive, nature-inspired treatments designed as restorative journeys, while additional facilities include a fully equipped gym, yoga terrace, walking trails, and padel and tennis courts. Each element is designed to promote both physical and mental wellbeing in harmony with the surrounding environment.

Importantly, the wellness philosophy at Elephant Point also embraces a broader sense of responsibility. The development places a strong emphasis on sustainability, with solar-powered infrastructure, water management systems, and a commitment to preserving natural wildlife corridors.

Community upliftment is equally central to the project. The development has already created over 1,000 jobs during its construction phase, with a further 300 permanent roles generated through the hotel’s operation—many of which benefit local communities. Guests are also invited to engage with initiatives such as Legacy’s non-profit programme, Legacy Pride, which supports vulnerable families through food security initiatives.

A Curated Range of Experiences

While the reserve itself offers a rich and immersive environment, guests at Elephant Point River Suites can also enjoy a wide range of curated activities.

These include up to two daily guided game drives, bush walks, spa treatments, and culinary experiences, as well as access to nearby attractions such as the Panorama Route, Graskop Gorge, and adventure activities in Hazyview. Helicopter excursions, cultural village visits, and rounds of golf at nearby courses further enhance the offering, ensuring a diverse and memorable stay.

A Commitment to South Africa

For Legacy Group, the launch of Elephant Point River Suites represents more than just a new development—it is a continued investment in South Africa’s tourism future.

“Elephant Point is another powerful expression of our belief in South Africa—its landscapes, its people, and its extraordinary potential,” says Bart Dorrestein, Chairman of Legacy Group.

“With this development, we are not only creating a world-class destination, but also contributing to meaningful job creation, community upliftment, and the preservation of one of our country’s most treasured natural environments.”

A New Era for Luxury Safari

With its combination of architectural sensitivity, immersive wildlife experiences, and elevated hospitality, Elephant Point River Suites is poised to set a new benchmark for luxury safari travel in South Africa.

Opening on 15 May 2026, it invites travellers from around the world to experience a different kind of safari—one where luxury feels effortless, nature feels immediate, and every moment is part of something greater.

About us

Actually, Home Food and Travel offers a lot more than just reviews of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.  We also visit great destinations, receive advice from interior designers and stop to smell the roses and taste the coffee.

Our team of journalists are seasoned travels and love visiting the myriad of exciting places around South Africa.  Whether it is off the beaten track or in the heart of the top attractions of the country, we’ll be there,

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you on the road!
