Animals around the world have the right to live freely and safe. Sadly, this is not always the case for wild animals, including the wolf. The Garden Route Wolf Sanctuary was founded in 2001, specially made for a group of wolves that had been rescued. Settled in Plettenberg Bay along the picturesque Garden Route, what started as a sanctuary has grown and evolved into an awareness centre and a home for wolves, wolf dogs, and even huskies.
Interact with wolves at the Garden Route Wolf Sanctuary

Wolves, creatures that have inspired myth, fantasy and fear. For thousands of years, they have been used to instil fear in the heart of man. However, as best said by author Liz Bombard in her novel The Complete Wolf, “Whatever is said about a wolf, the opposite is often true. They are magnificent creatures with complex behaviour and natures, and the Garden Route Wolf Sanctuary aims to create and spread awareness of this with every guest who visits.
Guests at the sanctuary are offered educational guided tours to get up close and interact with the resident animals. With tour times at ten-thirty, eleven-thirty, twelve-thirty and half past two in the afternoon, these tours have been described by sanctuary staff as memorable and one of a kind. Guests must note that each tour is dependent on the weather, and a minimum age restriction of twelve and older has been placed on the tours, as part of the tour involves entering the enclosures.
However, keeping with their family-friendly reputation, their farm is open to guests of all ages. Here, guests can view animals such as goats, sheep, ducks, bunnies, an emu, alpacas, donkeys, horses, and ponies.
How to get involved
The Garden Route Wolf Sanctuary is always welcoming to those who want to get involved in aid with the care of their rescued wolves. Any donation to the sanctuary and visit is considered crucial for the welfare of the resident wolves.
And there are many ways for guests to get involved aside from donations.
Firstly, take a trip on one of the guided tours and spread the information provided, as this helps increase awareness of the needs of these majestic creatures. A visit to the curio shop is an additional small way for guests to get involved or join their Adopt a Wolf sponsorship programme.
