The Village Lodge in Storms River Village is perfectly located for your adventure.

The Village Lodge Accommodation Storms River Village

The Village Lodge is perhaps the most well positioned accommodation in Storms River Village.  Located in Darnell Street, the main road of the village, this lodge is within a stones’ throw of almost every restaurant, pub and adventure activity in the village.

On a recent visit to Storms River Village with my kids I had the pleasure of staying at The Village Lodge.  Why was it so pleasurable?  Well the room was spacious, clean and very comfortable; the facilities were great, the garden attractive and it was super convenient.

Once we had parked our car on arrival, the car stayed stationery for the duration of our visit.  The offices for booking all the adventure activities are a few doors away and so is every restaurant.

What is now the managers accommodation, reception and dining room was built as a hunting lodge in the 1800s and was known as Die Jaghuis – the Hunting lodge.  People travelled on horseback from Cape Town or Port Elizabeth to hunt wild pig, antelope and leopard in the nearby Tsitsikamma Forest.

Today people still travel from far and wide to visit this area for adventure and fun.

Accommodation at The Village Lodge

Although the original building at the lodge is well over 100 years old the bedrooms are all newly built and custom designed for a guest houses’ needs.

There are a total of ten rooms at The Village Lodge.  All the rooms form an L-shape and help to create a central courtyard that is the focal point of the lodge.  The rooms are named after local fauna and flora such as Otter, Dolphin or Yellowwood.

Most of the rooms sleep at least four people.  These rooms come with a King size bed that can be broken into two single beds as well as a bunk bed.

One of the rooms, the Otter, can sleep six people thanks two the two bunk beds.  Two of the rooms, the Honey Badger and the Sunbird, only sleep two.

The rooms are neatly furnished and are very comfortable.  I slept in the King size bed with its fresh, crisp linen and can report that I slept like the dead.  My deep sleep may also have had something to do with the fresh air, intense quiet and atmosphere of relaxation that permeates the village.

Each of the rooms has an en-suite bathroom with shower.  We were amply provided with fresh towels.

For the summer heat there is an overhead fan and for the cold winters there is a heater, electric blanket and plenty of thick blankets.  The bedroom floors are carpeted, so no need to worry about putting your warm feet on a cold floor in winter!

Each of the rooms has a tea and coffee station, DSTV and a safe.

Facilities at The Village Lodge

Although accommodation is provided on a bed and breakfast basis there are also excellent self-catering facilities.  The self-catering kitchen, dining and lounge area are located in the courtyard and form the social focal point of The Village Lodge.

There are no self-catering facilities in the bedrooms as everything needed is in the shared kitchen and braai area.  This area can become quit festive as people from all around the world congregate around the large dining room table.

The breakfast room also faces onto the courtyard.  Breakfast is in the form of a buffet with cereal, fruit, yogurt, juices and coffee.  A cooked English breakfast may also be ordered.

Upstairs from the breakfast room is a family play room.  Comfortable chairs and couches surround a host of games from Foozball to electronic games.

My favourite part of the guest house is the beautiful, spacious front lawn.  Here you will find a walk on chess board and volleyball net.

The Village Lodge has free wi-fi, plenty of safe, off-street parking and very helpful and friendly staff.  The nearby Tsitsikamma Segway Tour is owned by the same people who own The Village Lodge and guests at the lodge get an automatic discount on the Segway tour.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Village Lodge and my kids were very reluctant to leave.  Can’t wait till I return.

Actually, Home Food and Travel offers a lot more than just reviews of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.  We also visit great destinations, receive advice from interior designers and stop to smell the roses and taste the coffee.

Our team of journalists are seasoned travels and love visiting the myriad of exciting places around South Africa.  Whether it is off the beaten track or in the heart of the top attractions of the country, we’ll be there,

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you on the road!
