Situated in the beautiful town of Swellendam, The Rain Forest Day Spa has a comprehensive menu offering unique treatments with peculiar names like The Cacoon, The Rain Dance, Two Oceans, Elephant Walk, The Sole, Initiation and The Journey to name a few.
It’s no wonder; they are often called ‘rituals’ and you can be sure that this is not your standard massage-and-go spa as I discovered when I recently took their Two Oceans treatment.
My passionate therapist explained that this treatment was inspired by the southern-most tip of Africa, situated less than 90km away, where the cold Agulhas Atlantic Ocean meets the hot Tropical Indian Ocean.
Hot and cold creates circulation, which is the motivation behind this sea-theme.
It started off with a relaxing foot spa – but again, not your ordinary foot spa.
I soaked my feet in a mixture of water and granules, which felt like I was playing with my toes in the warm sand.
In my mind I was whisked away to a beach far, far away with ocean sounds of waves crashing and birds passing by. I could feel my whole body relaxing.
After a few minutes, I made myself comfortable on the spa bed, ready for my Two Oceans massage. I received the most relaxing massage using a sea salt body scrub.
With a rocking wave-like motion, she massaged my arms, hands, legs, feet, and my chest without any rush. The use of hot sea stones interspersed with quick cool bursts of an oceanic jelly is designed to promote circulation and destresses your body completely.
You can feel the two currents, hot and cold, coming together.
After 90 minutes, my treatment sadly had to end, but I left stress-free and relaxed. My therapist gave me a little gift – a message in a bottle. I thought this was a really nice touch. I can’t wait for my next visit!
