Enjoy a quiet sanctuary at Assegai Rest Farm

Driving into the scenic Klaasvoogds Valley at the foot of the Langeberg mountains, I was instantly reminded of the song called ‘Hills are Alive’ from the musical ‘Sound of Music’ as I made my way to Assegai Rest Farm.

Assegai Rest was named for the Curtisia Dentata tree, commonly known as the Assegai Tree or Cape Lancewood. I was well-received by farm owners, Jackie and Andre.

The Assegai House, which I stayed in, is a four bedroom house.

One bedroom has a separate entrance off the veranda with a double bed, one bedroom with a double bed and two bedrooms with single beds.

There are two bathrooms, one with a bath and the other with a shower, as well as an outside shower set in the Big Fig Tree in the garden. Crisp linen and towels are provided, and an indoor fireplace is available for those cold winter nights. The kitchen is fully-equipped for all your self-catering needs, and the outside braai is great for cooking under the stars.

Assegai Rest is pet-friendly (on request) and allows you to relax and bask in the sun on a hammock in a private garden with a book.

I was very curious to see the other accommodation options – the Lancewood TiPi’s (teepee’s).

Lancewood Tipi Lodge

TiPi’s are elegant and sophisticated shelters that are large and spacious, and each TiPi site includes all that is needed for a self-catering stay. This is what ‘glamping’ is all about, living close to nature without sacrificing luxuries.

It was great exploring the farm, I even got to admire the fluffy cows that roam around. The bird watching is fantastic and the mountain views are stunning.

Cell service in the area is limited, which makes Assegai Rest the perfect place to escape from the world. Rest and Relaxation is the order of the day.

On that note, I decided to indulge in a ‘Holistic Massage’ treatment that is on offer by our host, Jackie. She has over 17 years of experience and offers a variety of treatment options. You can even experience a massage at your TiPi.

The other interesting activity is the Field Archery.

You first get to learn about the different types of Traditional Bows and the other equipment you need, e.g. arm guards and triggers. Andre then shows you how to stand, how to aim and the different techniques to shoot. It is a really fantastic experience that all members of the family can enjoy.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance. Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion. However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review. We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience? The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway. It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience. In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe. It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.
