Paragliding has started to become one of my favourite adventure activities over the past year, the thrill, unrivalled views and exhilaration that comes with it is something that needs to be experienced by any adrenaline junkie or nature enthusiast out there. Paraglide Africa recently offered me the chance to do a review and it was an opportunity I could not miss out on.
This was to be only my second ever tandem flight, having previously taken to the skies last year, however I am well aware that each flight is unique in its own right. Despite the fact that I had more of an understanding of what to expect this time round, I was eagerly awaiting the chance for lift off.
I was greeted at the popular take-off site in Sedgefield by Wilmari, with whom I had been liaising regarding the time and location for the excursion. Her admin skills are noteworthy as I can only imagine the planning it takes for large groups of visitors. We arrived on a stunning Saturday morning and before anybody could talk me out of it, I was putting on all of the gear and getting ready for the tandem flight.
I was delighted to be flying with Theunis de Bruin, owner and paragliding extraordinaire. He reminded me of what was expected of me, which was just to run at the start, brace for the landing and to enjoy everything in between.
Once you are in the sky your whole world view changes. The worries and concerns of daily life, the busy schedule we all have, what the next week has in store, all seem to disappear almost instantaneously. Paragliding is somewhat a great metaphor for life, sit back and simply enjoy the moment.
I enjoyed unforgettable views from above, views of Sedgefield and even as far as Wilderness. The beach and coastline could be observed whilst the sight of the other paragliders also made for a pleasant spectacle. As I chatted with Theunis, it is evident that his passion for the activity has not died and that he continues to live his dream job, which is always amazing to witness.
After a few daring manoeuvres coupled with gentle gliding it was time for us to land. Although I love being in the air part of me loved the thought of safety on the ground. The landing was remarkably gentle, almost like a butterfly landing on a flower.
The footage that was captured on the GoPro will forever be a reminder of the extraordinary activity that I enjoyed and I thank Paraglide Africa for the chance to experience it first-hand. I am already looking forward to my next flight!
