If you are hankering to get into the winelands and enjoy good food and wine, then head to the popular Goatshed Restaurant at Paarl’s favourite cheese-and-wine destination, Fairview.
On a recent visit to Paarl with family, I decided to do just this and booked a table for lunch.
Founded in 1963, Fairview has developed into a working farm that prides itself on providing and serving fresh, homemade and sustainable produce.
We’re delighted to welcome you to the Goatshed
After enjoying an informative and superb wine tasting in their Master Tasting Room we proceeded to the Goatshed Restaurant, which had recently revamped their menu to reflect some fresh, seasonal changes.
We were greeted at the door by Shannon, The Goatshed Manager, who showed us to our inside table on this rather chilly day. The venue is spacious with wooden tables and the underfloor heating makes it very cosy in winter.
For the warmer months, there is a large undercover patio and a seating area under the vines with views of the garden and the goats.
For starters, we chose the big cheeseboard, for which Fairview is famous. You can choose from the menu or create your own cheese platter, all accompanied by fresh bread, cured meats and preserves.
On the menu are a delightful range of bistro meals – chicken and mushroom pie, springbok shank and lamb shoulder (the meat just falls off the bone).
On the cold day of our visit, the lamb curry was the winner, with melt-in-the-mouth meat, served with basmati rice, a coriander and tomato salsa as well as poppadums. Delicious!
The menu now includes intriguing options such as Parma-style ham with strawberries, goats chevin, pine nuts and pecorino, duck meat wrapped in aubergine and black forest ham with manganello and semi-dried tomatoes or Pan-fried red snapper with green curry and coconut and coriander sauce. There are also vegetarian options and kiddies meals too.
With just enough space left in our tummies, our friendly waitress tempted us with the dessert menu. From baked cheesecake, chocolate brownies, to crème brûlée and malva pudding, the menu has something for everyone.
The baked cheesecake is the best I have ever tasted
To compliment this, you can also choose from the whole range of Fairview wines, which are also available by the glass and by this time we all thought we were experts on wine pairing.
The Goatshed Restaurant is a very pleasant dining experience not to be missed on your next trip through the winelands. It’s open seven days a week 09:00 to 5pm. For more information, call 021 863 3609, email fairview@thegoatshed.co.za or visit www.fairview.co.za.
