Located in the heart of Route 62 – the longest wine route in the Western Cape, is the lovely Montagu Springs self-catering resort.
As you travel to this tropical oasis, you will experience a kaleidoscope of scenic tranquillity made up of majestic mountains, scenic passes, rivers, vineyards and orchards.
Upon my arrival, I was directed by reception staff to one of their 17 Golden Terrace chalets.
After I unpacked my car, I took a deep breath and realised I have arrived in a perfectly peaceful place to unwind while I was visiting the marvellous Montagu.
The Keisie River runs through the resort, attracting many species of exotic birdlife both resident and wild, adding to the tropical atmosphere of the resort.
Guests can enjoy award winning pools, hot, cold and kiddies as well as discounted access to the hot mineral springs. There are over 90 clean, fully-equipped and comfortable chalets that can sleep up to four people.
Montagu Springs has a chalet for every budget level.
My cottage-style chalet had two bedrooms and an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower, a fully-equipped kitchen, air-conditioning, as well as an open plan dining area and lounge with a cosy fireplace – perfect for chilly winter evenings.
I could enjoy a cup of coffee on the large private patio leading off the living area that also incorporates a built-in braai, providing outstanding views of the surrounding mountains, orchards and vineyards.
Later, I took a walk around to see what else Montagu Springs had up their sleeve and discovered a crystal clear swimming pool surrounded by lush palm trees, and a communal braai area – perfect for large group gatherings. In addition, there are two tennis courts; a multipurpose Astroturf sport field as well as bicycles for hire among other additional facilities on offer!
Golden Terrace guests have exclusive use of a private pool and Villa guests have exclusive use of the Villa pool located on the Villa Terrace set against the mountainside.
After a wonderful night’s rest, I met with the Resort General Manager, Rob Gooderson. He told me their joy is in seeing families connect and enjoy the great outdoors as most of their guests come from the concrete jungle of Cape Town and don’t always have access to the outdoors.
Being in Montagu, there is no shortage of fun activities you can take part in. Be it a romantic vacation or a trip with the family, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Having to leave will be your only disappointment.
