If you’re not familiar with Franschhoek, it’s a quiet winemaking village, just 45 minutes from Cape Town, which explodes with life in the summer season. When looking for a place to spend the night in the area, you cannot get any better than a stay at the Plumwood Inn Country Guest House.
You can choose to stay in either the comfortable regular rooms, the Self-catering Boutique Villa or the Petit Jourdan Self-catering Cottage, which was our choice for our stay.
The Petit Jourdan is a self-catering cottage, which we found perfectly situated to take advantage of everything that Franschhoek and the region has to offer. It’s located on a small cul-de-sac with fields of vines both in front and behind.
The owners, who recently renovated the property, added extended stoeps along the front and back of the cottage, which means guests enjoy the perfect views of the Franschhoek valley, with its beautiful summer orchards and misty vineyards in the early mornings.
Despite a new modern style, the cottage did not lose any of its old charm.
We enjoyed the spacious living room overlooking the valley, with its cozy fireplace. Here, you can even catch the sun setting over the Franschhoek Mountains.
The early morning sun warms the outdoor dining area at the back of the cottage next to the swimming pool and braai.
There’s also indoor dining for 6, and a fully-fitted kitchen that’s perfect for communal cooking.
The two airy bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, with blue and grey details much like a cozy beach house. The cottage’s master bedroom has an open-plan en-suite bathroom with a tub, and the twin guest bedroom has a shared bathroom off the corridor.
There’s also a separate TV room and the cottage provides free amenities like DSTV, Wi-Fi, off-street parking, an abundance of firewood, and of course, the pool.
The area boasts culinary highlights including La Petite Colombe, Chef’s Warehouse at Maison, Foliage, Reuben’s Franschhoek, as well as all the vineyard restaurants nearby. And on top of all that wine, Franschhoek now has a home-grown spirit, Wilderer Fynbos Gin, made from a little of that pristine Franschhoek mountain water.
For a luxury stay in the rustic town of Franschhoek, look no further than the Plumwood Inn Country Guest House Cottages.
