Ermelo may not be everybody’s idea of a holiday destination but it is on the transit route to other, more recreational areas such as Swaziland, northern KZN, Mozambique and the Kruger National Park – depending on the direction from which you start your travels.
So, if you do happen to be visiting or passing through this area my advice is that you stop for breakfast, lunch or dinner at the fantastic Makou Restaurant.
Located at 24 Robertson Street and easily accessible from both the N11 or N17, Makou Restaurant has unusual but cleverly put together décor that is a mix of African plants and artefacts with silverware, mirrors and chandeliers and the old, refurbished tables with comfortable new chairs make this restaurant very inviting.
On a recent visit I was welcomed by owner, Andre van Staden, and shown to my table. There is seating indoors, and if you prefer al fresco dinning, then the court yard with its pond and peach tree is the place for you.
The menu is diverse and interesting with a mix of African, Asian and European dishes. A typical starter, of which I am very fond, is the grilled Halloumi cheese with Tzatziki sauce that is served with a slice of lemon and garnish. So simple, but so tasty!
As I am usually in transit through Ermelo and a responsible driver, my favourite liquid refreshment is the Marsala hot tea.
Andre says, “We carefully select our own spices for this tea and it is something unique to Makou Restaurant.”
The lamb curry is superb. Makou Restaurant sure know their spices and every mouthful of this curry is an explosion of tastes. I don’t eat carbs but it was no problem for the kitchen to replace the rice with a fresh salad.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Brunch, Drinks
Andre recommended desert; “Try the dark chocolate melted into coconut cream and mixed with just the right amount of chilli flakes served in a glass”.
Wow, that is the way to finish a meal!
