The small town of Addo, a mere 60km from Port Elizabeth, which can be comfortably reached within an hour – makes for a fantastic weekend break away or family destination.
Located in the centre of the Sundays River Valley and in one of the largest citrus producing areas of the country, Addo is the perfect gateway to the magnificent Addo Elephant National Park, a popular destination for locals and tourists alike!
As you approach the town, one of the first signboards you’ll see is for The Kraal Addo Country Estate.
The beautiful garden
My recommendation is that if you are looking for accommodation, a meal or a thirst-quencher in good company while visiting or passing through, that you read further and add The Kraal’s details into your phone now.
The Kraal boasts 21 rooms with options ranging from Standard Single and Double; Cozy and Cozy Plus (with TV); Luxury Rooms (with extra length, King Size, four poster-bed and fridge) and a Family Unit with two rooms.
All have en-suite; air-conditioning and tea/coffee making facilities. A comfortable shared lounge with fireplace is the ideal place to gather and watch a big game while the large, open-plan dining area is the heart of the building and caters for breakfast, lunches and dinners (the latter are optional).
There is also a conference facility, which can happily house up to 30 delegates; free Wi-Fi throughout the facility and the estate’s lawns and gardens are beautifully kept – an oasis in the dusty surrounds.
Last, but not least, the bar, complete with separate bar lounge, is where you’ll find The Kraal’s character – along with a few friendly local characters as well!
This is the favourite spot for a few regulars and a great place to order supper.
The area plays host to a number of great sights, restaurants and activities and The Kraal recently launched two Summer Specials, which include either a three-night stay with safaris at the Elephant Park; a private game reserve and a river safari day with activities or a four-night stay with safaris at a private game reserve; a river safari day and zip-lining/quad-biking at a another private game reserve. Other packages are available on their website.
I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Kraal; meeting the friendly staff and chatting to the owner, Colin Biggs. The accommodation was superb and the meals hit the spot in all the right ways! Why not make Addo, and The Kraal, a destination to visit at least once a year?
