Nestled in the Bot River Valley, city-dwellers can step back in time and enjoy peaceful surroundings at Swaynekloof Farm, where county leisure joins comfort.
The lifestyle farm is a unique destination and tells a tale of the early 1700 settlers. A portion of the farm is said to have been a passage way for former explorers which historians refer to as the Old Cape Wagon Pass.
Situated in the Overberg, about 4.5km away from the town of Bot River, the leisure farm is home to Zebra, Eland, Springbuck, and Ostriches as well as a few ‘zen-like’ Nguni cattle.
Just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town hub, guests can find peace of mind at breathtakingly beautiful conservation sanctuary. Exceptional bird viewing is guaranteed and roaring sounds of animal wranglers nearby keeps the still nights interesting.
Owners, Peter and Colleen Simmonds, bought the ranch in 2011 and have carefully restored the century-old cottages into comfortable self-catering accommodation units.
“At Swaynekloof Farm, we have created an animal and plant sanctuary which we would love to share with other country-loving folk,” shared Peter.
The farm is particularly beautiful in the winter months and the fireplaces in Swaynehuis and Top Cottage makes for a suitable hiding place on those cold, wet evenings.
ACCOMMODATION OFFERINGS AT SWAYNEKLOOF FARM
Top Cottage, called so because it is the highest of the units, overlooks the meadows, mountains, rivers and dams. It has a neat bathroom, an open plan, fully-equipped kitchenette and living room with super jetmaster fireplace. In addition to having its own private garden, patio and braai area, it shares a large lapa, boma, plunge pool and braai with Green Cottage.
You can wake up refreshed in a quaint, vintage-styled two-bedroom Green Cottage which dates back to about 100 years ago and offers guests a unique, but comfortable, lodging experience.
It has an open plan kitchenette and living area, private patio and built-in braai overlooking the beautiful Bot river Valley. The bedrooms come with double and queen size beds as well as a double bunk.
SWAYNEKLOOF FARM ALSO CATERS FOR HERITAGE AND HISTORY BUFFS
Meanwhile, the Riverside Cabin is a one-bedroom timber cottage; it’s the perfect spot for a ‘romantic getaway’. The cottage is suitable for guests, who like something a little more rustic, but comfortable and well-equipped.
Their Heritage Cottage is a restored small workers’ house with one bedroom, large bathroom with walk-in shower, hand basin and toilet. A quaint fully-equipped kitchen with open fireplace that is well-used in winter and a small lounge. There is a low ceiling attic above the cottage suitable for up to four young adults or children over six years of age.
All bedrooms are serviced with fresh pressed linen and towels to ensure you have a comfortable and pleasant stay. All bathrooms and kitchens have hot water and there is electricity throughout.
“We had a wonderful sunny relaxing family weekend for 17 people at Swaynekloof farm. We rented the Swayne Huis and another small house. The house is big enough for everyone to move freely around and equipped with everything you need. “
