Like me, if you sometimes find the beaches too crowded for your liking, it’s probably time to change tactic and a venture into the Karoo where there is always a new experience to be found on its dirt roads, small towns and farms.

If you end up in the Oudtshoorn area – which I think you should visit; check in at the Karoo Sun Guesthouse. I can confidently say that very few places in the region can match them in terms of friendly, excellent service, facilities and affordability.

Located along the Route 62 in Oudtshoorn, Karoo Sun Guesthouse is only 450 km from Cape Town and 60 km from George. It offers stylish, modern and clean guest house accommodation.

From the breath-taking scenery of the Swartberg Pass and Meiringspoort to the historic architecture of the Ostrich Palaces, Oudtshoorn has a lot to offer guests. There is the Cango Caves, meerkat experiences, crocodile cage diving, ostrich rides, tandem-skydiving and wine tasting.

As a tip, it is best to stay for at least two nights in order to really experience everything that Oudtshoorn has to offer.

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance. Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion. However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review. We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.
