One such gem is Away with the Fairies… Founded by Englishman, Dan Cornick, after visiting Hogsback in 1997, away with the Fairies is a backpackers accommodation at heart.

Hogsback, the place on earth rumoured to have inspired JRR Tolkien, is an area every person needs to visit at least once in their lifetime! Time seems to stand still in this mystic setting where you can lose yourself in its infinite beauty – unspoilt landscapes, breath-taking views and pristine forests.

It offers three dormitory options for six, eight and 12 people, as well as two private, double en-suite rooms. Camping sites are also available for those, who like to be closer to nature. Then there are the two self-catering options – the two-sleeper Dragons Lair Rondavel and four-sleeper Hobbit Cottage.

For hikers on the Amotola trail, who may prefer a bit more space, the fully equipped, self-catering, Acorn House can sleep up to 12 people in two dorm-style rooms. Set slightly away from the fairies, Acorn House offers privacy and magnificent views.

For those travelling with friends or family, there’s Striders cottage, which offers six en-suite rooms with double; twin and three sleeper options available.

Set upon the edge of a cliff and overlooking South Africa’s oldest forest, the three Hogsback mountains and complete with donkey boiler, you can enjoy an uninterrupted 30 minutes of awe and the best part is that it’s absolutely free!

The Fairies Kitchen serves breakfast and dinner 365 days out of every year and is the home of what could possibly be the best pizza in the world while the Wizards Sleeve Inn will keep your wheels well-oiled with great craft and commercial brews!

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance. Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion. However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review. We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience? The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway. It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe. It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.
