How does one create a restaurant where ambiance, food and service synergistically create the perfect dining experience? The magical answer to this question was no doubt sought as far back as ancient Rome.
Well, it has now been found at Remo’s Italian restaurant, which is situated along Alabaster Street in Port Elizabeth.
Located in an old warehouse with a nondescript entrance and tiny signage, ones expectations are not set very high on your first acquaintance with Remo’s.
However, step through the door and the sounds, aromas, lighting, laughter and eclectic mix of modern tiles, crumbling plaster, concrete floor, magnificent wrap around couch, framed black and white photos, glistening glasses, shiny espresso machine, raw wood, marble bar counter, copper pizza oven and smartly attired staff produce something, well, magical.
Autentica, it says on the menu, and with a wonderful sense of family heritage, this restaurant is real Italian.
There is also a strong New Jersey Italian influence and patrons would probably not be too surprised if Tony Soprano was shown to a table nearby.
And let’s not forget the food – ahhh the food! As I type this article, my mouth waters as I think of the delightful dishes, platters, bowls and plates of pasta, pizza, salads, cured meats, fragrant cheeses and fresh breads that I have sampled at Remo’s since its recent opening.
Yes, I have eaten there with my girlfriend on many a romantic evening and have sampled Remo’s various wares.
What would we suggest? Well, after much animated debating, the Arancini starter (Gorgonzola stuffed Risotto balls), served on a base of the best tomato sauce I have ever tasted, is a must try.
The Melanzane Alla Parmigiana is arguably the most delicious item on the menu and, to quote the menu, it is a “homemade, baked aubergine with mozzarella, tomato and grana Padano cheese”.
For dessert, try the Tiramisu. Wash this down with the La Capra Pinot Grigio and round it all off with a Caffè Corretto, which is a shot of espresso accompanied by a tot of grappa. Heavenly!
Yes, Remo’s famiglia, your Roman ancestors would be proud. Note – Remo’s Italian does not take reservations. For more information, call 082 877 6411.
