Holiday Coffee, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape
Local coffee shop, Holiday Coffee in Port Elizabeth celebrated a stunning win at the annual FNB Coffee Magazine Awards for Best New Café in 2019!
After opening their doors in December 2018, Holiday Coffee has managed to create a relaxed and comfortable environment while serving up some fantastic locally-brewed coffee.
“We are trying to do coffee in a market that is a little bit more detailed and specialised around coffee. It’s not only the environment we are in, but the equipment we use and the quality of the coffee we use and how we produce it,” said Chris Faragher, owner of Holiday Coffee Co.
Chris is a professional barista, world barista judge and educator for the Speciality Coffee Association. He has been in the coffee industry for 10 years and has been involved in many aspects from the maintenance of espresso equipment to training and teaching a coffee Diploma.
Every year, Coffee Magazine and FNB host the National Awards for coffee and nominate coffee shops around South Africa for the different categories and aspects of the coffee industry. The awards are hosted in Durban every year in line with the Creative Coffee Week.
This event is the highlight of those in the coffee community, with baristas and coffee aficionados and teachers from around the country attending.
“We were super stoked to come home with the award for Best New Café. It’s a really cool achievement, we are very fortunate to have won,” said Chris.
Holiday Coffee comes out on top
Five different cafés were nominated for the Best
New Café award; among them Pauline’s,
Brik Café, Holiday Coffee, Swan Café, and Skyline Café.
The criteria that the cafés must follow to qualify for this category is better equipment, higher quality beverages, better service, choice of design and outfitting, creative seating, flow and ambience, as well as great toilets and bathrooms, and a fitting menu.
The café also needed to be opened within the last 24 months and in that time manage to create something special in an environment where there was nothing.
“Holiday Coffee Company is a lifestyle coffee brand around which people are able to meet, relate, and form relationships while being inspired to dream. We work closely with our roastery to source and supply highly graded green coffee,” said Chris.
“We have worked tirelessly to develop both an exceptional flagship blend, as well as source an equally incredible decaffeinated coffee processed 100% naturally by CO2. In addition to this, we supply and produce specific seasonal single origin coffees.”
