Who doesn’t love the countryside? For urbanites like me, it’s a chance to fill the lungs with fresh air on long relaxed drives or walks while experiencing the beauty and peacefulness of the bushveld.
Self Catering Rustic Cabins
Situated in the Klein Karoo and surrounded by the famous Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains on the banks of the Olifants River, is De Zeekoe Guest Farm – a great choice for anyone wanting a secluded weekend escape just outside the town of Oudtshoorn.
De Zeekoe is actually derived from the farm’s name – Zeekoegat, which is Dutch for ‘hippo waterhole’. Over a century ago, hippos used to frequent the nearby river.
You will probably not encounter any today, but the area’s attractiveness for relaxing outings remains today.
De Zeekoe is surrounded by many activities including hiking trails, fishing spots, ostrich farms, wine farms, the famous Cango Caves, wildlife ranches, majestic waterfalls and museums.
The area is also a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 168 bird species while De Zeekoe offers a unique opportunity to observe wild Meerkats in their natural habitat.
Since you are not going to enjoy everything that the area offers in one afternoon, De Zeekoe offers comfortable, country-style accommodation in the form of a Main House, Lake Cabins and Cottages.
The Main House offers 21 luxury bedrooms with the option for mountain, garden or pool-facing rooms. You can also choose from having a standard room, luxury room, deluxe room, superior or honeymoon room. They come equipped with amenities such as air-conditioning, electric blankets, free Wi-Fi, TV, fridge, coffee and tea facilities and a hairdryer.
Then there are three private Stone Cottages, located a 5-minute drive from the Main House. They offer amazing views over the farm and the mountain landscape beyond. Here, you can enjoy activities like canoeing, fishing, hiking and biking.
The stone cottages have a private pool, mini-bar, indoor and outdoor fireplace, heater, DSTV, air-con and free Wi-Fi.
The self-catering Lake Cabins are also only a short 5-minute drive from the Main House and offer a number of lakeside activities. These rustic cabins are equipped with a shower, fireplace and free Wi-Fi. Please note water level may drop during dry season.
Most of us won’t want to cook on holiday, so De Zeekoe Guest Farm has a great restaurant onsite that offers inventive and delicious, traditional breakfasts and dinners with a Karoo twist. Secure parking is available on-site.
