Kaapschehoop is a delightful hamlet located about 30km from Nelspruit. Founded during the early gold rush and then almost forgotten when the diggers moved on to richer fields at Pilgrim’s Rest, Kaapschehoop has a number of wonderfully preserved old cottages.
On a recent visit to the area, I was treated to amazing hospitality at The Nest B&B, which is owned by Berenice and Peter Legg. Berry is well-known locally for her Miz Gooz Berry brand that specializes in confectionery and handmade, quality foods.
We were served English High Tea and were assured it’s how they welcome all guests. It was absolutely refreshing and scrumptious – we later found that this goes for every meal served at The Nest B&B.
You have a choice of three comfy suites at this establishment – The Nest, The Birdhouse and The Snug.
The Nest has a French country ambience with pastel colours, wooden furniture and plenty of lavender in the small garden that surrounds the private veranda.
The bedroom has a queen-size bed, fitted with percale cotton linen and the bathroom has cotton towelling and a corner bath. A small fridge, DSTV, microwave, griller and coffee/tea facilities are provided.
Meanwhile, the Birdhouse is slightly bigger and sleeps up to four guests with a queen-size bed and two single beds, in a large room, with a separate bathroom and kitchenette and dining area. A fridge and freezer, DSTV, microwave, induction cooker, and griller, are provided as well as coffee/tea facilities.
The Snug has two single beds, a bathroom with a shower and a coffee/tea station. No television.
What makes this guest house unique is the hospitality.
You can see that Berry has a passion for making people happy and comfortable, whether it is with her welcoming smile or the delicious meals that she prepares.
I am gluten intolerant and find that not many restaurants or cafés at guest houses provide for my special dietary requirements. However, Berry went out of her way to prepare my lunch, making me the best Ratatouille I have ever had.
That evening, I indulged in grilled salmon with a mango, avocado and pepper salsa with parsley rice. For dessert, she served a Raw Strawberry and Raspberry Cake. Oh my word, it was all delicious!
The next morning, we had breakfast consisting of fresh juice, Berry’s homemade granola, double cream yoghurt, fruits, with a selection of homemade bakes and breads as well as various preserves, Italian cheeses, smoked meats and locally made relishes and curds.
I found The Nest B&B to be a quiet, peaceful, refreshing and relaxing getaway location and will return soon!
