Delightfully secluded and peaceful, Thatcher’s Rest is the perfect escape for those, who enjoy tranquillity and relaxing in total serenity. This self-catering accommodation offering is situated on a working farm and surrounded by the beautiful hills of the Biggarsberg mountain range.

The house is a double-storey thatched roof cottage that is set on stilts within the largest of six dams on the farm. The cottage is accessed from the shore by a wooden walkway.

Bring along the whole family or a group of friends and experience a quiet, relaxing holiday away from the noise of the big city.

Thatcher’s Rest is also the perfect place to hold a small, private, self-retreat, offering rest for the soul and food for the spirit.

Accommodation at Thatcher’s Rest

This two-storey cottage can accommodate up to seven people at a time. There are three bedrooms, each one tastefully furnished and decorated.

Two of the bedrooms are situated upstairs. The main bedroom comes with a Queen-sized bed, private balcony with beautiful views of the dam and landscape, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower.

The second bedroom comes with twin beds, which can be joined together to form an extra width Queen-size bed. The en-suite bathroom comes with a bath.

The third bedroom can be found on the ground floor and comes with twin beds, which can be combined to form a large Queen-size bed, beautiful views of the mountains, and a bathroom with a shower, directly next to the room.

An additional single bed is available on the mezzanine that is suitable for a child to use.

Facilities at Thatcher’s Rest

In the cottage, you will find an ample supply of crockery, cutlery, and good quality cooking utensils, towels and linen to cater for seven people.

Should you plan to go swimming in the dam, you are requested to bring your own swimming towels.

The kitchen is open-plan and fully-equipped for all your cooking needs. Similarly, the lounge is cosy, comfortably furnished and comes with a Jetmaster fireplace and the double volume ceiling makes it feel more spacious. Its large windows make it a great place to relax in the summer while the fireplace will keep you warm and comfortable during the cold winters.

An enclosed and furnished veranda with lovely large windows, allowing a 180-degree view, leads into the kitchen and lounge area so that everyone can be part of the fun and conversation. Families or groups of friends enjoying this cottage can dine together at the large dining table or relax in the veranda/ lounge area.

On the outdoor deck area, with lounge chairs and a table to dine on, you will also find a deluxe gas braai unit and a Weber Braai, available for your use to enjoy a traditional South African cookout under the beautiful skies.

There is also a traditional wood braai on the shore beneath the Willow tree if you prefer.

Should you require a maid service during your stay one can be made available at a nominal charge. There is also free, undercover parking available at the cottage for up to two vehicles.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important. 

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table. 

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.
