Found Guest House Pongola a great retreat!

Guest House Pongola

I recently spent two nights at the 3-Star Guest House Pongola and my experience was nothing short of amazing. The outstanding service that I got there left a lasting impression on me.

The town of Pongola is located near the Lebombo Mountains in the northern Kwa-Zulu Natal and is situated just to the south of the Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) border.

Pongola is a popular spot for tourists thanks to the numerous game lodges and reserves that our found nearby. The Pongolapoort Dam is the only dam in South Africa where you can catch African Tigerfish.

The town is also popular with businessmen needing a comfortable place to spend the night.

We were met at reception by the on-site manager, Michelle, who ushered us to our room. I knew that a quality stay was awaiting me as I previously stayed at their sister establishment, the Salt Rock Manor.

I immediately noticed that Michelle takes genuine care of her visitors and we were affectionately referred to as her ‘darlings’.

She takes the time to get to know her long-term visitors and it was evident that friendships had been built over time with her other guests. My friend and I certainly enjoyed our time with both Michelle and the other guests.

During our final night, Michelle told us that we would be enjoying a braai for supper. I was excited as I hadn’t been able to enjoy one during my trip. This fellowship was one of the highlights of my stay.

Guest House Pongola is the ideal retreat for those, who travelling between towns or for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Accommodation at Guest House Pongola

Guest House Pongola has a selection of twelve comfortable rooms, with seven in the house and five outside. This establishment has a variety of family, twin and queen-sized bed rooms.

The rooms at this establishment are semi self-catering and contain many of the basic essentials one would need during a stay.

The rustic charm of the guest house is matched by the elegance of the garden area. This garden is lined with tall palm trees and one gets the feel of enjoying a tropical stay. The team evidently takes a lot of effort in the maintenance of the plants and garden area.

In addition, the outdoor patio area is beautifully-styled and again maintains a certain class, which is found throughout the establishment. Each room is air-conditioned and is definitely a necessity as the town can get very hot during the summer months.

There is a flat-screen DStv in all rooms as well as complimentary tea and coffee. All rooms have their own bathrooms and various options of showers/baths are available. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the property.

Guests are often seen either enjoying views of the garden or even getting some work done on the ornate chairs.

Children are also welcome!

Facilities and Bed and Breakfast at Guest House Pongola

The fact that breakfasts can be arranged by prior arrangement is ideal. Michelle prepares wholesome meals which I thoroughly enjoyed. A selection of yoghurt and cereal is accompanied by the more traditional English and Continental Breakfasts that are served.

The large outdoor swimming pool was the first thing I noticed upon stepping outside. The greenery of both the plants combined with the picturesque pool makes for a great place to sit back and enjoy a picnic with family and friends.

There is also lots of secure parking for cars and boats.

Reviews from previous Guest House Pongola guests

“Only stayed for one night, but would have stayed for a month. Beautiful location spotlessly clean and very reasonably priced. The pool was really the reason I went to this particular b+b and again I wasn’t disappointed,” shared 844timothyj on their TripAdvisor page.

Jonathan wrote, “One of the best, cleanest and most comfortable guest houses I’ve had the privilege of staying in. 5 star breakfast, again one of the best I’ve had at any guest house. Thank you.”

Crishendar wrote this on their Booking.com page, “Everything. Location is perfect, the room we stayed in was perfect (with a private patio with a view of the garden) and the staff is truly amazing.”

Actually, Home Food and Travel offers a lot more than just reviews of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.  We also visit great destinations, receive advice from interior designers and stop to smell the roses and taste the coffee.

Our team of journalists are seasoned travels and love visiting the myriad of exciting places around South Africa.  Whether it is off the beaten track or in the heart of the top attractions of the country, we’ll be there,

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation

So what is the right accommodation?  Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.

Expensive is not always better.  Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday.  They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.

The reason for your travels will also affect your choice.  A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.

Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.

Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance

To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance.  Of these, service is the most important.

No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion.  However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.

We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review.  We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.

However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.

Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid

How do you know when you have had a great spa experience?  The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.

Well that’s our theory anyway.  It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good

A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced.  However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.

Adventure!

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience.  In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.

Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe.  It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.

On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities

If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.

If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.

We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.

See you on the road!
