The Walkersons Hotel & Spa is situated a mere 10km away from Dullstroom, on a stunning bucolic property.
What was originally a farm owned by the Walkers, is now a cosy country hotel. Built in 1993 this five-star hotel offers a choice of 27 hotel suites, 14 Lakeside suites and 11 slightly larger, luxury Lakeside suites, plus six fully-furnished, spacious self-catering cottages dotted around the grounds.
The winding roads that lead you to the Walkersons Hotel & Spa have wonderful views. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by hotel staff who made me feel welcome and right at home.
Great rooms with great views at Walkersons Hotel & Spa
The rooms are spacious and have everything you could possibly need, from a hairdryer, plasma TV, minibar, fireplace, a lounge and a private patio overlooking the dam and the Steenkampsberg. Wi-Fi access is limited to the main lodge building.
My bed was king-sized and fitted with white percale linen, allowing for maximum comfort. I felt like I was sleeping on cloud nine.
The natural beauty surrounding the Walkersons Hotel and Spa is something to behold. The sight will make you want to stand still and bask in the feeling of nature, or enjoy a scenic hike or cycle around the area. You can also enjoy a scenic horse ride on the property.
Dullstroom is considered the fly-fishing capital of South Africa and Walkersons boasts 14 lakes and dams, so you won’t have to travel far to find a selection of well-stocked dams and outstanding fishing facilities. In their dams, you will mostly find Rainbow Trout. Its value as a hard-fighting game fish that makes for a tasty meal is undeniable.
Experience some thrilling fly-fishing
Both novices and experienced fly fishermen alike are invited to try their hand at fly fishing at the hotel. Their guides are also always on hand to help any guests come to grips with the art of fly fishing, which makes Walkersons a fly-fisher’s paradise.
If you are still not convinced to try fly-fishing at Walkersons Hotel & Spa, you can still enjoy are clay-pigeon shooting and golf in the surrounding area.
If you prefer a more relaxing activity, the Walkersons Spa, which has been in business for over 12 years, has a wide selection of treatments for you to choose from. There are great picnic spots to enjoy and a pool at the hotel for in-house guests.
Try out their fantastic restaurant
Meals at the Walkersons Hotel’s restaurant – the Flying Scotsman, are definitely not to be missed. Seeing that I was in the fly-fishing capital, I of course ordered the trout for dinner. What a treat it was! My meal, prepared by the Walkersons culinary team, was pure perfection, from the presentation on the plate to the taste – my mouth watered the whole way through.
And I couldn’t possibly neglect the dessert menu! Ladies, leave the dieting at home because you will surely regret not trying their selection of sweet treats.
Lunch and lighter meals are served from the hotel terrace, which overlooks the views of the lake and natural surroundings.
My stay at Walkersons Hotel was truly memorable as I rejoiced in total relaxation and indulged in delicious food. I will definitely return!
