Calitzdorp is one of those small Klein Karoo towns that you probably have never heard of, but must visit if you truly want to get lost and see South Africa’s unspoilt backyard in the process.
In-between your scenic drives on the open road, your best choice for an affordable and comfortable rest is at the Red Stone Hills Guest Farm, which is located between Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp.
The farm is surrounded by beautiful landscapes near the foot of the dramatic Swartberg Mountain range and strikingly reddish-hued koppies called Enon-conglomerate – probably explains the name of the farm. It is believed these blood-red rocks date back to the birth of the African continent millions of years ago and contain iron-rich deposits from ancient rivers.
There are eight secluded cottages, each with spectacular views of the river, the red stone hills and vineyards. You may be in the countryside, but your hosts have endeavoured to ensure their guests have comfortable stays.
Each cottage comes equipped with a neat queen-sized bed, air conditioners in the main bedrooms, free Wi-Fi, a clean bath and corner shower, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen, satellite television and a lovely fireplace.
The cottages can accommodate up to six people, depending on your selection, so do not leave the family or friends behind.
Red Stone Hills Farm, which is owned by the Potgieter family, is situated on the fringe of the semi-arid plains of the Little Karoo – providing excellent opportunities for birders to identify species from a variety of habitats. It is also along the way to the famous Cango Caves.
The farm itself has an array of activities to offer, from horse-riding to mountain biking to hiking trails, to private ostrich tours and maybe even take a relaxing swim in the local river or swimming pool.
Those travelling with kids will be happy to know that they have tractor rides and your kids can help feed the animals in the mornings.
While stays are offered on a self-catering basis, your hosts will be happy to meet your request for breakfast and evening meals.
It’s probably the best way to sample Karoo-style cuisines.
So, if you’re planning to hit the road and explore the arid Karoo, then consider a stop at Red Stone Hills Guest Farm. To book your stay, call 072 901 5654, or email info@redstone.co.za or visit www.redstone.co.za.
